Why Ukraine’s Kursk offensive could bring Azov prisoners of war home | Analysis

For more than two years since Russian forces took her son prisoner at the Azovstal steel works in Mariupol in 2022, Larissa Kycherenko has prayed for his release.

Now, Ukraine’s offensive into Russia’s Kursk region has raised hopes that may finally come home.

“The other women and I read about the possibility of the prisoner exchange on Telegram. That there are conversations about that going on. We are truly hoping and praying that this will be the case,” Ms Kycherenko, who’s husband is also in Russian captivity, told the Telegraph over the weekend.

“But the reality is that we are dealing with Russia. Russia is such a country that you cannot believe them. One day they say one thing, then the next another. We are truly hoping there will be some form of exchange.

Ukraine has been secretive about the tactical objectives of its invasion of Kursk.

Perhaps it should be a war crime to hold prisoners of war – what if international law requires a 3rd party country to hold prisoners – where it is much less likely to suffer from abuse and torture. Ukraine would then pay monthly for the food and medical care of their own soldiers and Russia would do the same. Both are allowed to inspect and see that their soldiers are in acceptable conditions.

    It’s important to note that Russian conscripts are an incredibly sensitive group for Russia bc they’re not really supposed to be fighting and their parents get unusually vocal, so the fact Ukraine took a ton of them prisoner actually puts a unique amount of pressure on Russia to get them back home as soon as possible which gives Ukraine leverage

It's just funny, hilarious how the US and other countries are warning Ukraine not to use ALL THE STRONGEST WEAPONS to attack Russia, that criminal schizophrenic Putin; how dare all those countries coming up with such outrageous proposition. Putin didn't say or ask any permission to anybody BEFORE he VICIOUSLY INVADED Ukraine. This is just unbelievable and ridiculous.

  20. Worth mentioning that 95% of Ukrainians in Russian prisons were tortured abused and even sexually assaulted while Russian prisoners kept in good conditions according to the Geneva convention.

  21. This is really missing the statements from the ICC and other organizations that the Russians systematically torture the Ukrainian PoWs.

    Whereas this does happen but very incidentally on the Ukrainian side. It’s a major factor of the injustice of this.

Les images montrées à la télévision russe de l'intérieur du bâtiment montre, effectivement, que tout a brulé, mais absolument aucune trace de bombardement. Let's take a moment to appreciate that these Ukrainian defenders courageously held the defence of Mariupol for 86 days – eventually confined in underground shelters together with civilians, without sufficient food, water, medicine, or weapons. They not only resisted the enemy for 3 months (and the Russians were throwing everything, including the banned phosphorous shells) but also protected the civilians who took shelter in the underground of the Azovstal factory. But it wasn't just the Azov battalion, there were many other Ukrainian soldiers too.
