Every time someone pipes up about Zelensky and Ukraine govt being anti Christian I ask them if they could support a church secretly full of CIA and FBI agents that spy on them and their neighbors. Cuz that’s basically what it is except it is russian FSB embedded in Moscow Patriarchy.
RT is already fuming. Censorship! Persecution! How are we going to keep our FSB agents roaming free in Kyiv?!
Most countries have also banned mosques linked to Islamist terrorists. I don’t see any difference here.
The clergy are accused of being foreign agents. The faithful are beaten. Their Churches are taken away to be turned to museums. Congratulations, it’s now 1921 again.
Before I get all the “ruzzzzian” comments, I do not, and have not supported Russia in this war. I have not supported Patriarch Kirill’s blessing of this war.
The clergy of the UOC, including Metropolitan Onufriy, asked for autocephaly from Moscow in 1990. The monks of the lavras took Churches that were destroyed, and restored them to their original beauty with their own hands. The UOC fathers and donates aid to help the war effort and civilians affected by it.
Am I saying there are no clergy who support or are under influence of Moscow? Of course not. I would imagine any sizable religious organization in any country has some foreign influence.
From the outside looking in, (and I’ve followed this issue since before 2016) the push for the creation for the OCU by Petro Poroshenko and his kind was all about outright nationalism, not driven by any sort of piety. It would be better if those who are beating babushkas and desecrating Churches to admit they just want Orthodox Christianity removed from Ukraine. You’d rather the litany responses be “Slava Ukraine”, not “Gospodi Pomilui.”
