Why Ukrainian troops pushed into Russia’s Kursk region

Ukrainian troops have pushed into Russia’s Kursk region, taking control of territory in a bid to create a buffer zone and weaken Moscow’s ability to resupply its forces. As CBS News’ Ramy Inocencio reports, the surprise incursion has lifted spirits in Ukraine after months of challenges.

  3. "Why Ukrainian troops pushed into Russia's Kursk region" : Because the U.S. was worried about Russia's possible response to an Iran-Israel conflict escalation. As a result, the U.S. gave the greenlight for NATO-backed Ukrainian forces to push into the region (something that was previously forbade).

  4. This is a raid into Russia to force Russia to pull experienced troops out of Ukraine to deal with it. Russia has been reluctant to do that, so they lose more and more territory every minute.

Once Russia does respond, Ukraine will just disengage and go back home laughing the whole way. Putin looks weak to the world. Russian refugees are now spreading tales of how Ukraine took their villages without a fight as the Russian soldiers surrendered en masse

  5. Russian troops have fully liberated the town of New York in the Donetsk People’s Republic. The settlement bearing a peculiar name had been turned into a major fortress by Ukraine. Capturing New York opens a path towards Toretsk, another major Ukrainian stronghold in Donbass. Both towns have been heavily fortified by the Ukrainian military ever since hostilities broke out in the region in the wake of the 2014 Western-backed Maidan coup. Ukraine’s top commander, Aleksandr Syrsky, planned and ordered the attack on Russia’s Kursk Region in a last-ditch attempt to avoid being fired, The Economist reported on Sunday. According to sources familiar with the planning for Ukraine’s largest cross-border incursion to date, Syrsky was on the verge of being sacked just weeks before the operation began because of the crumbling front in Donbass.

As tensions mounted, Syrsky devised what The Economist described as “a daring gamble born of desperation,” with several scenarios on the table. These included attacks on the Kursk or Bryansk border regions, or a combination of both. “The main objective was to draw [Russian] troops away from the Donbass stranglehold, and to create bargaining chips for any future negotiation,” the article stated.

As the fighting rages on in Kursk Region, The Economist cited Ukrainian soldiers as saying that they “are already beginning to see a different level of resistance,” with losses mounting.

The Russian Black Sea Fleet's marines have captured a sabotage and reconnaissance group of 19 Ukrainian servicepeople near the village of Olgovka in the Kursk Region.

Those captured belong to the 22nd separate mechanized brigade of the Ukrainian armed forces.

Ukrainian propaganda is stuffing the media scene will old videos of the first days of operations on the Russian border, trying to hide the fact that the Armed Forces of Ukraine did not achieve any tactical military goals of their offensive operations in the Kursk region. They lost the main trump card of a surprise attack and now are trying hard to build defense lines in the previously captured settlements.

At the same time, the intensity of fighting does not decrease. Footage from the area allowed one to conclude that the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) are suffering heavy losses both in manpower and military equipment. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are losing much more equipment per day than before the invasion of the Kursk region. More and more groups of Ukrainian servicemen surrender.

Meanwhile, the Russian army is advancing more and more rapidly on the Donbass frontlines. Over the past day, Russian forces achieved important victories in the area of Toretsk. As a result of successful offensive operations, they destroyed a large Ukrainian stronghold and took control of New York. The town once renamed by the Kyiv regime is turning back into Novgorodskoe. Zaliznoe located nearby became Artyomovsk again. As a result of the breakthrough, Russian forces gained a foothold in the center of Nelepovka. According to preliminary reports, Russian forces began an assault on Toretsk from several directions.

The Ukrainian defenses were worn down in the Pokrovsk direction. Over the past day alone, Russian troops took control of Novotoretsk, Zavetnoye, Nikolaevka, Sviridonovka and Krutoy Yar. Ukrainian forces are retreating from other villages nearby.

Russian assault groups entered Novogrodovka and took an important stronghold of the AFU, approaching the outskirts of Selidovo.

The upcoming destruction of the large defense node of the AFU has great strategic importance. The entire Ukrainian front in the Donetsk People’s Republic may fall and the Ukrainian military command has no reserves necessary to secure it.

  6. Fake news as usual. The Economist: "Russia’s double-punch back against Ukraine’s shock raid. It is bombing Ukrainians in Kursk and advancing in Pokrovsk." What could possibly go wrong?

  7. Desperation? They could have been sent to Donbas, but they'd have only slowed the steamroller there, not stopped it. Germany is looking for a way out of supporting Ukraine. They announce that in next years budget support for Ukraine will drop by 50% (though they say Ukraine has "full support"). Germany is #2 after the US for support of Ukraine, but they are ultra-PO'ed now by the confirmation that Ukraine bombed Nordstream2 , costing their economy $700B. Even Germany isn't rich enough to just let that go…."

  8. Lol..this is the end of Ukraine and NATO troops. Its a suicide mission..western media why dont you report that Ukro troops are surrendering right now?

  9. Russia if you haven't taken Ukraine by now it's not gonna happen. You've already lost all your best men and equipment and you're not taking it with barely trained kids.

  10. American MUST work harder and send your money to Ukraine; never mind a chaos in America 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
