China, Philippines ships collide in South China Sea | DW News

China claims almost all of the South China Sea, including the Second Thomas Shoal. Several Southeast Asian states have made conflicting and sometimes overlapping claims in the South China Sea. Beijing rejected a 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague that said that China’s claims did not have any basis under international law. In July, China and the Philippines reached a “provisional arrangement” aimed at ending maritime confrontations near the Second Thomas Shoal, allowing Manila to resupply the atoll. The Philippines deliberately ran aground the Sierra Madre ship on the Second Tomas Shoal in 1999 in order to assert Manila’s sovereignty over the area. Filipino troops are stationed on the shipwreck and require regular resupply.

  1. They did not collide in south china sea because it happened in the Philippines EEZ West Philippine Sea…you guys should report fairly and not biased, shame on you

  2. Hang on, isn"t the smaller boat supposed to get out of the way of the bigger boat? Seems to me that the Phillipine sea-men were at fault. But I still feel sorry for damage to a ship, and hope nobody was injured or died.

  3. The Filipinos thought they could sneak into China's territorial waters late at night without being detected. However, the Chinese coast guard is on duty 24 hours a day. And their AWACS aircraft patrol the South China Sea almost around the clock.😂😂😂

  4. This is horrible. The bullies can no longer hide behind their rote "Who, us???" feigned innocence. It's become a global joke.

the Philippines' EEZ is recognized by 99%* of the world ; it's not even a close debate
(*and by *100%* of countries whose citizens enjoy freedom & democracy….a real pity that 1.3 billion middle-kingdom serfs still don't)

  5. China wants this area to secure their trade routes in the event of a blockade from America & its allies. They will use whatever lame justification they can to say why this area rightfully belongs to them, when really they are fabricating a claim. I support the Phillipines in this dispute, and I believe China is threatening Phillipino territorial integrity.

  6. Omg, is that we type of country being bullied just like this…I'm so proud of Ukraine and Israel , they were small countries compare to their enimies but the will to defend its sovereignty is high ..
