I have no love for either Putin or his police state- style of government- but calling this operation "an embarrassment to Putin" is the height of ignorance. People are making far too much of this operation- which is being carried out in a U.S. election year to drum up U.S. and western funding. This offensive is going nowhere unless the Ukrainians can reach Moscow and topple Putin- and they can't. Every mile that the Ukrainians advance just adds to their perimeter which must be guarded- and that alone will grind this advance to a halt.
But suppose that the Ukrainians- against all the odds- close in on Moscow. That will constitute a threat to the existence of the Russian state- a scenario in which the Russian constitution authorizes the use of nuclear weapons to defend.
