Soviet aircraft carrier on fire in Chinese lagoon

A former Soviet aircraft carrier that became a popular tourist attraction in China caught fire in a lagoon close to Shanghai.

Footage shows The Minsk, once a jewel of the mighty Soviet Pacific fleet, engulfed in a huge blaze over the weekend, with thick smoke and large flames lighting up on the night sky.

Firefighters spent over 24 hours trying to contain the fire, which Chinese state media said happened during renovations for it to become the centrepiece of a new military theme park.

There were no casualties reported and the cause of the fire is still being investigated. Pictures later showed extensive damage to the warship’s superstructure, with charred pieces of metal protruding from its main deck.

  1. if a country can't build an aircraft carrier, they aren't a BOSS, they a Player…it takes a technologically able society to build an aircraft carrier…..how many does America have? yeah, that's right, we MAKE THOSE HERE

  2. Was built in Ukraine by Ukrainians as all ships what russians have because all what russians have is hijacked from others nations. russians never even built any tall ship, all of them they have were hijacked from Germany after the 2 WW.

  3. The Minsk hasn't been an operational ship for 30 years. It's been fighting several scrapping attemps and a time as a theme park attraction in China for nearly that long. I guess the current 11-year refit was not working out and the insurance payout is the next best option.
