Keir Starmer’s cynical embrace of Nato is a sad sight indeed | Lindsey German

  1. What a stupid argument, supporting NATO is anti war in this instance as they seem to be the only thing stopping another Russian invasion

  2. There was a coup in Ukraine in 2014 in which the US government got their preferred candidate in power: [Ukraine: far-right extremists at core of ‘democracy’ protest](https://www.channel4.com/news/kiev-svoboda-far-right-protests-right-sector-riot-police?vid=jeremy-corbyn-will-not-be-readmitted-as-labour-mp-sir-keir-starmer-says)

The version of events being flooded across British media doesn’t ever seem to provide this nuance.

The goal has always been to get NATO nukes on the Russian border and to challenge the port in Crimea – no government would ever accept this, Russia included. This confrontation was inevitable since then, and it’s perfectly plausible to see the US as the aggressor (as is consistent with their entire history). It doesn’t mean one side is good and the other is bad, but it’s more useful than the child-friendly narrative that’s being rabidly pushed in the UK.

It’s pure insanity that so many people are rabid for war under such circumstances. Once again, our media is largely not fit for purpose.

  3. God I’m getting bored of these self hating western narratives…

There are many things wrong with western society such as being rife with inequality and unaccountability. That being said, there are now genuine threats that have not been present for the last 30 odd years. China and Russia both want to assert their power and influence and have much different views on human life than we do.

We have largely grown soft and now no longer take these threats seriously… even when a hostile nation expands. Now is not the time to bitch and moan about NATO when Putin is clearly weighing up the pros and cons of taking Ukraine. I would also suggest the idea of war is massively overstated, much more likely that they will reach for economic sanctions.

This is all too reminiscent of Russia poisoning someone in the U.K, publicly mocking us and then having Corbyn come out and say we don’t know it’s them.
