  1. I don’t want US style prison populations but this is utterly insane. The chances of people being caught for the crimes here (burglary, theft etc) are small. Then nothing meaningful gets done even if they are caught, even if it makes it to court, even if they are finally convicted.

    What about deterrence, about societies right to be safe?

  2. I mean this is a stupid story. If someone got 100+ convictions by their early 20s then went straight and then did something fairly minor 30 years later then why should prison be the first option?

    Equally, it’s worth remembering that not all crimes are imprisonable so if you have a thousand previous convictions and commit a non-imprisonable offence then you still can’t go to prison!!

    That is a poorly researched article written by somebody looking for clicks not factual reporting.
