Somehow no matter where it is I go in Europe I see a confederate flag some random place. I just joined a gym in the new town I moved to and I spotted it out of the corner of my eye. I was thinking “no way lol” and sure enough as I went outside to get a better look. Is this AFDs new flag?

  1. It’s not the AfD’s new flag. It might be flown by people with questionable political views, but it can also be flown by people who just like Country and Western music. On this side of the Atlantic, people aren’t necessarily aware of its historical significance.

  2. I get more worried when I see the flag of Apartheid South Africa (rarer, but it happens).

    Some symbols have undergone more semantic bleaching than others, but others are really unambiguous statements of certain beliefs.

  3. 9/10 times you see a confederate battle flag in Germany its bikers. Nothing political.

    Calling it the AfDs new flag os hilariously stupid though.
