Yeah and broadly it never will be again. Globalization, automation and gigification are good for efficiency of production and consumers; but bad for the leverage of workers, especially in the developed world.
Focusing on workers is mostly a distraction. We are so insanely wealthy right now, as a country and a species. We need to focus on voting rights and treating healthcare, education and basic income as human rights. There is no merit based system that includes systemic poverty, all that does is justify nepotism and hierarchy based on inheritance of wealth.
