Long version: beverage cartons are so-called composite packaging (Verbundverpackungen), i.e. a mix of cardboard, plastic and occasionally aluminium with (predominantly) plastic closures. Waste paper/cardboard can very often be recycled, but composite packaging can only really be incinerated (elegantly formulated „thermal utilisation/thermische Verwertung“) because it is very difficult to separate the materials again.
Because they are all thinly lined with a type of plastic.
