This sounds like the sub was probably in waters the Japanese claim. The US Navy likes to do that sort of thing in disputed territorial waters.
Like a whole carrier group might sail around the South China Sea as a stick in the eye to China.

How did they get the message of this “being US submarine” and not one of North Korea, China, Japan, or even Germany or India, for instance?
Did they yell loud “we are a US submarine you russkies” or something like that?
EDIT: how about the french… they seem to have an excess of nuclear submarines, for instance.
Good we need to push on Russian borders as they do with ours.
again double rotten standards of Europeans. if the US and the EU violate international laws, then this is good and generally shut up. Russia is moving the military across its territory. Russia is bad; they generally need to be destroyed and force applied to them.
