On this day, the 12th of February 2019. The country known as the Former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia renamed itself the Republic of North Macedonia in accordance with the Prespa agreement, settling a long-standing naming dispute with Greece.

  1. This was a deal that left nobody satisfied, which means it was more a less a middle solution.

The main issue in Greece was never the geographical aspects – there were (and still are) a few fringe voices claiming that the word “Macedonia” in NM’s name would let them have territorial ambitions against Greece, but these are a fringe minority.

The main issue is the fake history North Macedonia was teaching (especially under Gruevski), claiming they are descendants of Philipp II and Alexander, naming public places and streets and stadiums with the names of Ancient Macedonian figures, who were Greek. North Macedonians are Slavs who came to the region many centuries later.

Sadly, North Macedonia seems to have similar “falsified history” issues with Bulgaria now, which more or less confirms what I already believed, that they are trying to create a national identity based on their own distorted version of history.

At some point they need to get over the fact that they are a very new nation and the area’s history before they settled there has nothing to do with them.

  2. Most idiotic claim ever. It just shows the lack of support smaller countries have among international community.

  3. As a Southeast Asian, I was confused when I first encountered the name North Macedonia as news of its name change never reached me. I always thought of it as FYROM until very recently.

  4. Incredibly juvenile. Being so offended about another country’s name displays nothing but low confidence and insecurity.

  5. Was the day I realized Turks and Greeks are truly brothers because I would have only expected such nationalistic idiocy from my own countrymen.

  6. Nothing good came from it, as soon as the deal was made with Greece, the Bulgarians came out of nowhere with even more silly demands but why wouldn’t they when this government is giving away everything for nothing in return.

  7. Imagine throwing an whole tantrum abt a name. Sorry but I have seen many countries with this problem some actually even worse but not one of them took it to this extend abt it, it’s childish and takes us away from actual problems.
