Should be an interesting one. Who just didn’t live up to the hype / potential?

  1. Controversial vote from me today: Big Meeks. I know he was a solid player for us for a few years but he really could and perhaps should have been a world beater and England starting RB for a decade.

  2. Benjamin Mendy

Not only waste potential. He wasted his life.

  3. Adam Johnson as a (dis)honourable mention. Besides all the noncing that happened after he left us, he was trying to live the footballer lifestyle when he wasn’t all that there yet. His talent was extraordinary and he could have been one of the best English players of the 2010s. He had such a skilled left foot – arguably the best at the time along with David Silva. But he just made dumb decisions, on and off the pitch. He could have been so much more than he was when he was with us, and he just let it all go to waste (and then some)

  4. Might be a bit unfair but Michael Johnson.

    He’s just 36 now

  5. Mario Balotelli. Had the potential to be one of the best strikers of his generation.

  6. I’m gonna go with Guidetti. That virus completely fucked him up

  7. Remember when Patrick Roberts was been hyped as a future England player and star of the Prem, debuted for Fulham in the Prem at 17, we signed him and he played a few games for us and now he’s bounced around as is in the Championship playing alright at Sunderland

  8. Stephan Ireland for me. He was unbelievable and had the world at his feet. His life decisions, and mentality, just sent him the other way. Was such a shame, he honestly was unreal from 2007-2009. Michael Johnson probably is the biggest talent to never pan out but I l find it harsh to label him as biggest waste as injuries and mental illness aren’t really his fault.

  9. The answer is definitely Mario, but for absolutely no reason, I was convinced that Brandon Barker was going to be a regular first team player. Easy to fall in love with Academy players sometimes.

  10. Mario. Because I think so and also because it’d be funny if he was Funniest and this. Very Mario.

  11. It’s Michael Johnson.

Wasted potential through no fault of his own but he was the Foden before Foden. A local lad that looked set to set the world alight. Unfortunately all the injuries happens and that created a downward spiral, it’s great that he found success out of the game but man what could’ve been.

If he’d hit the heights that were expected of him he’d probably have only left the club recently. With multiple domestic trophies and a CL under his belt.

  12. Everyone saying Michael Johnson but I think Ballotelli is the correct answer.

  13. Paul Lake .. not his fault either .. botched surgery on his leg ruined his potential and career ending .. At least he’s a club ambassador…

  14. People are acting like Mario had small bouts of brilliance and that’s all he was. No, he was unplayable for entire games at his best. It’s gotta be him

  15. I think Michael Johnson is unfair as it wasn’t wasted, it was just injuries that destroyed him.

Sane takes the pick for me. He was on the path to becoming truly world class if he had have stayed. Ended up becoming a mid-tier winger at Bayern.

  16. The answer is Paul Lake, for the sole reason that literally no other player from that era or before is being talked about in this thread

  17. Honorable mention for Cancelo. Man was just about first name on the team sheet after kdb at one point
