There are companies in the United States that you have heard of that do this. I work for one so I can’t tell you the name. It is possible. It doesn’t go for management though.
This should be a law everywhere. Not just in Australia
I already have the right to do this, it’s called ignoring that shit if I am not being paid handsomely to be on standby.
That should be a thing anywhere and everywhere. I work a job with fixed hours and get paid hourly. I don’t read or respond to work emails outside of my work hours, nor do I do anything work related. Since you don’t pay me, don’t expect me to do anything for you.
(I am a Canadian living in Ontario, where this kind of law applies as well, despite the fact that the company I work for is headquartered in California. Where the employee is physically located determines what laws apply to that employee.)
You already have the right to do this. It’s called you’re after work hours and can ignore any call
I bet it’s going to be just like in the US.
Sure, you don’t have to answer your phone and you can ignore their pleas for your attention all weekend long. Legally, there’s nothing they can do about it.
Though they will make a note of that and next time they need to lay somebody off, guess who’ll be getting the boot?
It’s their world and they force us to play by their rules. That’s why I don’t give two shits about any of them and will never feel even remotely bad about jumping ship.
That’s why I email things to the guys that worked for me as opposed to calling/texting.
In our IT policy it *explicitly* stated that they were not to access their work emails on personal computers, phones, tablets, etc and that they were only expected to review emails during business hours (8-4). That last part was actually in bold and required them to initial it as when they signed the policy. And we policed it.
I don’t understand people thinking that they must absolutely have an answer at 7pm on a Tuesday. It’s just that they have come to expect any information at any time they like due to the internet.
I’m doing it already, fuxk that
They’ve been doing it for decades, even at work.
For international companies it can be very hard to get everyone on a call at a reasonable time. I always try to take the hit on my side but what are you supposed to do if you need to get the US, UK, and Australia all on one call? It’s going to screw someone no matter what.
I was in the hospital and my boss called me all the time. Once a nurse was giving me an EKG test and couldn’t believe he actually called.
I’ve been ignoring work emails for years.
Now? Where I live – in Germany – that is standa. Many amployers don’t care and many employees don’t know that, though.
Cool so continue as normal.
This is a big deal, yet you have the media constantly telling us our government is useless and does nothing. How often did we get news like this, award wages going up beyond inflation, investment into housing, an anti-corruption body, and a competent leader on foreign policy. Rupert Murdoch is a cancer and can get fucked
Unless you are getting paid to be “on call”, you should never be expected to answer a call or respond to an email outside of your work hours.
Unless it’s emails or calls from your fellow employees and you want to compare your wages and benefits, or discuss forming/joining a union, then go ahead!
If my boss was the type to expect me to work 24/7, I’d get an ABN and charge the fucker contractor rates for out of hours work.
Eh I always do this lol
My bosses always try to communicate with me beyond working hours. I only read them the next working day, and sometimes they are furious i dont reply to them that day lol
It’s genuinely surprising that wasn’t already the case, or had it just not been tested in the courts and people wanted something new on the books to just settle it?
Everyone has this right. Doesn’t matter where you are.
Does your job literally require you to be on 24/7? I doubt 99% of jobs do. It’s you who need to recognize you have a life outside of job.
The wealthy in America won’t let that happen.
It’s incredibly sad this has to be enshrined into law.
Before you accept an offer, ask what the expected hours are. Then, set boundaries by not working outside of those hours.
What if you have a “on call” job and company provided phone?
Thai shouldn’t even be a Law but common sense.
We *really* need this in the US…
even with MNCs everyone knows Australia teams do whatever the fuck they want.
they are too far away in timezone and they clock out at 5pm making it hard to find an equitable time slot when you need to make calls across continents. 6 hour difference between Asia and Europe is ok. 12 hours Asia vs US is still ok. but 15hrs US vs Aus? fuck that..
you also can’t fire them because of their godlike employee protections. it’s very much an employee market over there.
what you have here is a country which is very closed and protected with few MNCs willing to expand heavily there unless extremely warranted.
if it works for them , good .
