  1. Ironically I think Trump would potentially be a cause to further European thinking in the EU and move us closer together. But it would be at the risk of making it significantly worse also.

Ultimately as long as we are divided we will always be treated by the US as the sidekick. They decide stuff for themselves and they ask us to do stuff (in the case of defence spending not without reason). United we can be partners on equal ground, and we can also stand up to China better.

  2. After reading the article, the title should be, ‘why Europe needs America’. The only example he gave of Europes usefulness was that they buy our weapons! And some BS about shared values (though we have completely different values regarding freedom vs security). Could have added in the EU regulating what the US innovates, an actually interesting dynamic.

  3. >> Why wasn’t Europe consulted when the United States decided to deny certain semiconductor chips from being exported to China? Is there any agreed strategy on Taiwan? As seen from Europe, the increasingly popular idea in Washington that America should focus on China and leave Ukraine for the Europeans to deal with is outright dangerous.

This is so wild to me. Can other Europeans confirm or deny this view point? I simply can’t understand how one can seemingly want a seat at the table for handling the pacific when you’re not willing to spend your country’s treasure to secure your backyard?

  4. TL;Dr: It doesn’t matter who wins the election. Either get on board with the USA on China or don’t expect any favors anytime soon.

  5. We always have and always will. It’s nice to know that no matter what, they always got your back.

  6. On a world-leading technical level, yes. If you talk about survival. The EU and the US can survive just fine on their own without the other. it’s when other countries cause bullshit and turmoil around the world. If anything the EU would have it more difficult due to its natural topography and hostile nation-neighbors.

  7. Article: How Europes lack of innovation has made it reliant on the US, China, and previously Russia.
