    It’s just a debate. Surely, he can present a vision for the next four years and defend his policies on all the pertinent issues?

  14. I can see how this may read as him laying the foundation to back out, but that’s not an option for him.

    He’s just whining about it because he knows he has to do it and doesn’t want to. To maintain his *brand* (narcissism) and perceived *strongest, most courageous, most stable* and *very not weird* guy status, he can’t back out. His followers would view that as one of the weakest things he’s done. He would hemorrhage support.

    The macho-man, tough guy, deal-making-genius perception he NEEDS to maintain will not permit him to bow out. MMW.

  15. This is a tactic. He has to appear, because if he doesn’t, Harris can point to an empty podium and say “he’s not here to represent you. Only I can represent you. I care about you. He doesn’t.” Result: Harris wins debate and probably election.

  16. So what happens if he ducks Harris? Does she just get free reign to talk and answer questions while Trump’s podium sits empty? It seems like something you wouldn’t want to just up and cancel, I imagine, unless I’m overestimating the planning and logistics that go into a presidential debate.
