>Ukraine has made no secret of its wish to join Nato and the EU, both of which demonstrate its leaning towards the west.
I always find it fascinating how a not entirely unimportant question is always left out of such articles.
As a sovereign state, Ukraine has the right to join alliances such as the EU or NATO.
But does the EU even want to admit Ukraine? We haven’t admitted anyone since 2013 and it doesn’t look like we’ll be admitting any new members in the foreseeable future.
Macedonia has been a candidate since 2005, Albania since 2009, Montenegro since 2010, and Turkey has been an official candidate since 1999! Of course, Erdogan doesn’t want to join anymore and the EU doesn’t want to accept Turkey, but these examples only show that just because you want to become a member doesn’t mean you will be accepted.
I’m not even sure can you call it neutrality. Finland insisted that it’s neutral and usually Soviet Union insisted back that Finland was pretty much militarily allied with it or at least under its sphere.
Now Russia likes to call Finland neutral and usually Finland corrects that Finland belongs to the EU and is only militarily non alligned, not really neutral.
