Extreme ‘Black Swan’ water tornado sunk Bayesian superyacht

THE BAYESIAN yacht was sunk by a freak “Black Swan” waterspout which would have appeared without warning, maritime experts believe.

One British superyacht expert has said the industry has “never faced anything like this” after the boat sank some 164ft to the bottom of the sea in mere minutes.

The yacht’s 264ft tall mast was hammered by a water tornado as storms battered the Porticello Harbour near Palermo in Sicily at around 5am on Monday.

  1. For me as NA rather than considering the irresponsability for not to look for harbour waters while the storm approach presumably knowing by the weather forestcast, the combination of the vessel heading (presumably transversal to the incoming waves or paralel to the shoreline, anchored not sailing) with the main enviromental actions on the hull expose to the waves (load condition) and the gusting wind forces on the mast that at the moment of the mast collapse generate a spring trigered like effect that over come the yacht transversal stability capability inducing a counter moment around the vessel (Roll Resonance) leading to the yacht capsized and flooded after that through the open hatch , very sad event. Rgds

  2. I’m not a marine engineer but…

Why don’t yachts have lighting systems that can stay on when they get wet? More people might escape sinking vessels if they could see the exit route.

And why aren’t yacht windows fitted with self-closing mechanisms to stop water pouring in and sinking the vessel? Similar to the lesson learned from the Herald of Free Enterepise sinking.

  4. his partner was somehow killed the same day ina differnt incident which saw him get run over lol. people that this powerful, just dont care anymore. we know they exsist but cant prove it, how isit even remotley normal that 2 people who are going through a fraud case, was killed one part of the world. and then 5000 miles away, this guy boat sinks lol, fair enough the waters had a part to play with the boat, but it dont make sense

  5. "keel wasn't properly deployed". I would suggest that, when at anchor, the keel being in its stowed position, is the proper place for it. Being deployed ( in the down position) just creates more opportunity for marine life like barnacles to attach themselves or for other garbage to get tangled, or perhaps be grounded more easily depending on the depth of the water.

  6. How dare you denigrate our beautiful black swans here in Western Australia!!!
And stop wasting money on a billionaire’s foley …….

  7. Freak event right enough, The Sun journalists confused not knowing the difference between a tornado and a water spout. Nobody cares about this story, nothing else to report on? Maybe some happy news for a change, is that asking too much?

  8. Powerful people die within a couple of days of each other after winning a case against even more powerful people. Had to be the weather as it's very common for twisters in the water to sink a particular superyacht and leave all the other boats alone. Sure

  9. Does Italy not have an actual navy that can get this done? Every day is footage of haggard divers and ridiculous drone subs. Italy or British should request other countries navy to float boat back to surface with buoys.

  10. It shows how what appears a triumph at the time, can have the seeds of our destruction. He was celebrating a momentous court victory. Had he lost the case, he would have seen it as his darkest hour, unaware that losing had saved his life. How sadly ironic then, his yacht was called the Baysian.

  11. It's shocking coincidence how high profile people just vanished in the sea when so many were rescued….it's spooky and mysterious.
