What is going on is a bargaining of sorts about which side Russia will take in the USA – China conflict.
Russians basically say through their actions “Ok Yanks give me Ukraine and we’ll be on your side”.

It’s pretty evident that Russia and USA don’t want to fight a war with each other, not even a proxy war. Rhetoric from the USA is that they will not send soldiers to fight in Ukraine.
This conflict is pretty much Russia wanting to have control over Ukraine and Ukraine wanting no such thing. It looks like Russia is willing to use military force to establish that control. Other nations like USA and ones in Europe don’t want that to happen. The situation is not too complicated.
