“No Conflict Can Be Resolved…” Modi Urges Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Kyiv on August 23 and met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. During their meeting, Modi emphasized the need for diplomatic talks between Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, asserting that “no conflict can be resolved on the battlefield.” This visit followed Modi’s earlier trip to Moscow on July 8-9, which faced criticism from the US and Ukraine due to its timing coinciding with a Russian strike on a Kyiv children’s hospital. While Modi condemned the killing of innocent children in an implicit critique of Putin, India has maintained a close relationship with Russia since the Soviet era and has not condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
