  2. It’s funny to me because the people that complain about “woke” are also the people who are very “rah rah capitalism/everything I don’t like is communism” yet the entire “woke” direction in films is based on the capitalist urge to make headway in new markets.

    No one was like “Let’s make this million dollar blockbuster with XYZ solely for diversity!” Instead it was definitely more about “Let’s make Character X Race Y so Race Y goes and sees our movie!”

    Now, it is a very convenient/useful political shield sometimes, especially when your movie/TV show does bad. But it’s not like “being woke” is the overall goal.

  3. To answer that question on an industry wide level, no. As the buying power of white America decreases and more demographics grow in size, content will grow to reflect that – which is good mind you.

    It’s not woke, it’s reflective of the target audience, which in the case of network police procedurals, is the largest possible audience. All those putting energy into fighting the “woke agenda” are wasting their time.

  5. Here’s the thing, too.

    Many SVU episodes also utilize real-world cases/stories as bases for their plots as well.

    With the internet, we have more stories opening up out there and showing these cases/stories across the entire spectrum of humanity.

    I haven’t watched SVU for years, and that is a rewatch that would be an endeavor. But I also like to think that SVU nowadays still has episodes where justice is not always served, the endings are bittersweet, and it continues to show that the world is not a perfect place.

    And let’s not forget that New York is still at the heart of being a diverse hub of all sorts of people because it’s historically been a gateway kind of city.

    “Woke” is just a term that has no clear or sound definition that can be utilized to describe what this person means with SVU. Instead, let’s consider more applicable questions like… “how is the SVU writing nowadays from an entertainment or storytelling side?”.

  7. It’s woke now? Because I distinctly remember way the fuck back in 2004 or 2005 an episode in which a Trans woman murders her assailant because he was going to out her to his transphobe friends. She’s convicted and sent to a male prison where she’s brutally assaulted. If that entire plotline, including the dilemma of whether or not what she did constituted self-defense at the time given the circumstances and the widespread understanding among investigating officers that she certainly did not deserve the sentence given to her, wasn’t woke *then* what exactly are they doing *now*? Because you don’t get a plotline in SVU much more woke than that.

  10. Since the show has acknowledged since the beginning that sex offenses actually happen and aren’t just made up by women, the entire premise is “woke” as far as conservatives are concerned.

  19. I’m not an avid Law n Order guy. But, hasn’t it always been “woke”? Maybe people are just starting to pick up on it, as the news is much more controversial today. Maybe the writing quality has gone downhill (I haven’t watched it in a couple years) but IMHO, nothing really changed.

I think one of the main points that people keep pointing to as “woke” was when a white woman was raped by a black man but said she didn’t want to press charges because of the systemic racism that occurs in society and that if she pressed charges on him she’d ruin his life and also had a line about how she’s had white privilege or some thing like that. Like… yeah, he raped you… he’ll probably do it again if he thinks he can get away with it, black, brown, white, Asian, who cares? Rape is rape. Like, it’s cringey dialogue and plot lines such as this that have people calling some of its episodes “woke”.

  28. I worked an episode of SVU on Dick Wolf’s birthday. Apparently Dick watches the dailies everyday so all the stars were wishing him a happy birthday on their last take. I remember Ice T said, “Dick, you my number 1 ni**a for real.” And said a bunch a cool AF, Ice T sounding rap shit to the Dick Wolf and it was hysterical. He had the crew in stitches, like, T you can’t call him the N word! He was like, but he is my ni**a. It was awesome.

    1) Mind your own business
    2) Be polite and have good manners
    3) There is no truth. Everything is theory
    4) Don’t yuk other people’s yum

At this point, no one uses “woke” in a positive way, which was the word’s origin; for a while now, I operate under the assumption that anyone who says/types “woke” is a scumbag with trash morals. I guess the only exception would be a clearly ironic use meant to satirize exactly those scumbags…

  31. It has gone downhill imo. My girlfriend got me into it as she’s watched for many years but she had to give it up. They try to hard to stay relevant with pop culture and current slang

  33. There was a definite change in tone, it felt more serious in the earlier seasons vs the newer ones which I felt were cheesy

    I like Olivia, I really do, but with her promotions she shouldn’t be the main star of every episode.

    She’s out there having gun fights like once a season now when she should have a desk job.

  42. I don’t know what other crimes Ice Tea committed in the past but I do know he was a big time pimp and remember seeing clips of him attending the pimp ball a long time ago. So I guess you couldn’t call him woke.
