  1. ***The Telegraph reports:***

[Mexico](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/mexico/) is considering using masked judges to try organised crime suspects in an attempt to protect them from drug cartels’ brutal retribution.

The proposal was added this week to a controversial package of judicial reforms being pushed by [Andrés Manuel López Obrador](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/andres-manuel-lopez-obrador/), the outgoing president.

It comes after a spate of [murders of police chiefs](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/07/22/mexico-city-police-chief-shot-dead-drug-cartel-hit/), prosecutors and judges as the [cartels’ power and reach](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/02/01/cartel-boss-barbie-helped-mexico-president-gain-power-claim/) has grown since Mr López Obrador took office in 2018.

In one case, the judge Roberto Elías Martínez was gunned down by two men as he got into his car in the crime-wracked central state of Zacatecas in December 2022.

  2. That won’t stop them getting their identities. A few bribes to the right people is all it takes.

  3. To remain an honest government official in that country seems like it takes insane courage

  4. Just do away with an in-person trial alltoghether. Written submissions only. Its something most judicial systems used at some point in the past and while most democracies moved away from it, it is a possible measure to take while still ensuring a due process. Or make the judge present only through teleconference with obscured face and voice. Record it court-side for posteriority and audits, but seal the record.

  5. I know it’s Mexico and Luchadors and whatnot, but get the showrunners of squid games to lend their designers. I want some really intimidating masks for the cartels

  6. Or they could use Luchadores as judges. Just a thought….

  7. Same thing as happened in Colombia during Escobar’s reign

  8. The Mexican Justice Department was quoted as saying:

    >And now, coming in from the *top rope*….. it’s your honorable Señor Ortega!!!!

  9. All that’s going to do is get some court officials rich, and get a bunch more judges killed.

Probably the safest way to do this is to hire judges from a different country and do the trials virtually.

  10. Perfect. And have them shuffle around the country. If you get the wrong judge, you could be offing an ally.

  11. You gonna mask everyone in the courthouse? There will be some clerk that can get the information needed.

  12. The cartels dont care who they kill. They’ll just kill who they think it is and the politician that was supposed to keep them out of court.

  13. Why not just do virtual court and keep the cameras off? It would probably be safer for witnesses too.

Here in Canada, courts went pretty much completely virtual during covid. Even before, a lot of bail hearings were virtual.

  14. And this is why I look down on people who do drugs imported from Mexico. They are destabilizing a country just to get a quick fix.

  15. Mexico needs to go FULL Venezuela! Literally no other option
