Germany’s far right targets renewable energy in bid for first election wins

1. Germany’s far-right AfD party, hoping to clinch its first wins in two east German state elections on Sept. 1, is trying to pick up countryside votes by making opposition to renewable energy projects a centrepiece of its campaign.

   It proposes tougher new planning rules on constructing turbines, imposing higher energy-storage requirements for renewable projects, and rolling back rules requiring that set proportions of land be used for wind energy.

   AfD candidates are also peppering their social media pages with posts about how renewable energy is driving up consumers’ energy bills.

   The message is resonating with rural communities frustrated with the centre-left federal government’s push towards renewable energies and could boost the AfD in the elections in Thuringia and Saxony, where it is polling in first place on around 30%.

6. Honestly just bring back the Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands. East Germans seemed to be so much happier and less destructive when they all worked for the Stasi.

12. My overlap with AfD’s agenda is consistently among the lowest among all parties. BWS is the third biggest in the polls as russian puppet person-centric party lol. CDU isn’t anything to write home about either – we’ve seen long enough where it leads us in terms of (digital) infrastructure after their many years under Merkel.

13. It’s strange that the article makes no mention of AfD’s position on nuclear power, since fairly judging their energy policy requires looking at the whole picture and not just one part without context.

20. Since coal and gas are the driving force for the price (gladly nuclear is gone that was even more expensive) this would turn out in a loose-loose situation for the voter.

    But at the moment the AfD can say the sky is red and everyone will believe it.

21. Germany tore down their nuclear plants and now rely on coal. Is that right or left wing?

22. Well of course they hate renewable energy. If there was a choice between saving kittens and drowning kittens, AfD would immediately come out in favor of the latter.
