   Translate:

   Dutch F-16s may be used by Ukraine over Russian territory. This was confirmed by Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans to the NOS on Thursday. The new cabinet is following the policy of the previous one.

   Brekelmans’ remarks followed those of Commander of the Armed Forces, Onno Eichelsheim, who earlier on Thursday told the NOS that targets in Russia may be attacked using fighter jets supplied by the Netherlands. However, civilian targets are strictly prohibited, the defense minister emphasized: “Those are the conditions we have set.”

   Former acting Foreign Minister Hanke Bruins Slot had already stated at the end of May that Ukraine may use the F-16s to attack military targets in Russia. The new cabinet has not deviated from this, even now that Ukrainian troops have invaded Russia.

   The Dutch permission is particularly noteworthy in the international context. Other allies of Ukraine are much more restrictive about where the weapons they supplied may be used.

   For instance, the United Kingdom allows British tanks and armored vehicles to be used on Russian territory, but not Storm Shadow cruise missiles. According to British media, the major issue is opposition from the Americans. The United States fears Russia’s response if they grant such permission. The long-range missiles in question would require American systems to bypass Russian defense measures.

   The delivery of F-16s to Ukraine also faced objections from the U.S. for a long time, as the fighter jets are manufactured there. Last year, the Netherlands and Denmark were the first countries to decide to supply F-16s. The Netherlands has committed 24 aircraft. The first Dutch and Danish F-16s arrived in Ukraine in July.
