I feel you. My kids also have the attention span of gnats.
They can watch random youtube videos and whatnot for 4 hours straight, but whine when they have to sit through a 2 hour movie.
Then, at the end, they usually always admit they enjoyed it!
This has been true with my daughter, have tried all kinds of different movies but every time she just ends being bored after a half hour and wants to go do something else. Seems like the kids are too used to instant gratification now and don’t want to sit through a whole movie to get the point.
tik tok is changing its name to tik, because tik tok is too long and nobody reads the whole name.
Wanting to be an actor/director and not watching movies, is like wanting to be a writer and not reading books. Too many people in hollywood now who just want the fame or worse a platform.
Parenting in a nutshell nowadays.
Break the movie into 107 sixty second clips.
Got a parent who spends forever picking a movie or TV show and then goes on their phone and occasionally glances up.
The most beautiful cinematography and visual storytelling is on screen – they miss it. Then say something was missing from the film. I swear parents are worse with phones than Gen Z at times is all I’m saying 🤷🏾♂️
I don’t want to sit through a 3 hour movie! Whatever happened to a nice 90 minute run time?
My son will watch at a theatre but not at home . I hear the next Gen are demanding to have chat box on the screen in movie theatres so they can interact. Oh well they will make their own shitty future. They are experts after watching 1-2 min clips on TikTok and YouTube on any subject. 🤷🏼
Tik tok has destroyed attention spans.
YouTube/tiktok attention span
TikTok and smart phones/tablets in general have ruined most people’s attention spans and eyesight. It’s time to have phone/tablet free time each day.
They know you can pause a movie and watch it later, right?
TBF growing up in the 80s, most movies were 90 minutes. Now a simple comedy is 2 hours or more. Have no idea why movies are getting longer, as attention spans shrink?
Hollywood movie times have lengthened since the 80s/90s.
Even Ryder’s new movie is 15 minutes longer than the original, which was a tight 90 mins. I predict that extra time won’t add much.
Besides, we tolerated a lot of subpar movies and television back in the day because our entertainment choices were much smaller.
The kids are fine, we’re the ones who got old.
To be fair, I’m 42 and the run time is definitely a consideration nowadays. One of the reasons i haven’t sat down to watch Killers of the Flower Moon yet.
While I agree, I also think part of the issue is bloated movies that don’t need to be nearly as long. Martin Scorsese is one of my favorite directors of all time but carving out 3+ hours to watch his latest film when I have a full-time job and family isn’t always the easiest.
It’s not unusual for even non-epic movies these days to be 2.5 hours. Hell, even animated movies–which used to nearly a sin to go longer than 90 minutes–routinely bump up against 2 hours now.
So I think both things can be true in this case. Younger generations have worse attention spans, but asking and caring about how long movies are these days is a valid question that is earned.
The tik told of the world have affected attention spans. Personally I love sitting down on a weekend night and watching a movie with my phone tucked away. Call me old, but it’s great
My son is like that, he says it’s normal too. His reasoning comes form watching anime with 23 minutes episodes and he says “that’s the new normal. I think things changes with generations and that’s normal. People use to read the new paper on commute but now uses smartphones, we won’t go back to the old standards but in a way, they will never really leave completely. Maybe long movies will be 60 minutes instead of an hour, or have episodic installments.
Maybe they say that because movies are too long these days.
Totally agree, but runtimes are getting out of control.
I’m reluctant to watch a 2.5-3+ hour movie if I’m not into it. No problem if it’s something I’m interested in watching, but yeah, I kind of get not putting that time into something someone never heard of or not the type of movie they typically enjoy.
I’m more willing to take a chance or check a box for 1.5-2.0 hour movies.
I’ve never had anything against long movies as long as the story requires it. Not every movie needs to be long just to be long.
“How long is it?”… that’s what she said.
We’re looking at you, Millie Bobby Brown
As someone who works in music…you’d be amazed at how many “professionals” I work with who simply don’t like music, don’t follow music, and hate going to shows.
She’s definitely talking about Millie Bobby brown here 🤣 as she said she doesn’t watch movies, she doesn’t have the patience to sit for 2 hours 🤣
