  2. There’s a lot to be said about Nicosia that is interesting. This factoid however, was depressing – “Nicosia held the unenviable position of being the capital city with the least green spaces in Europe, with only three percent of the city covered with trees.”

  6. The name “Nicosia” (which comes from the middle French “Nicosie”) has two possible roots:

    1) Corruption of the Greek “Λευκωσία”, possibly influenced by the extant town of Nicosia in Sicily (then ruled by the also Francophone Normans).

    2) Corruption of the earlier name of the city “Καλλινίκησις/Καλλινίκηση” which referred to the initial medieval settlement close to ancient Ledrae.
