Ash Regan, the Alba MSP, opened a consultation on introducing the so-called Nordic model to Scotland in June, which would make it an offence for someone to buy sex, as well as repealing the offence of soliciting — which would criminalise the prostitute — and wiping previous convictions under the previous law.

But National Ugly Mugs — a charity that supports those in sex work — accused the MSP of trying to “sneak through” the consultation by releasing it before the summer recess at Holyrood and “failing to notify affected stakeholders” such as itself

  2. So clearing past convictions from the records and shifting the criminality to the user is a disaster. Would they also describe the current situation as the same? For the women continually arrested and charged?

  4. I don’t like prostitution, but the reality is it will never go away. Same deal as cannabis and other soft drugs.

    So legalise, regulate, tax. If something is between consenting adults and it’s not going away, then the logical thing is to make it as safe as possible.

  8. There always has been prostitution! There always will be prostitution! Enacting laws hasn’t and will never stop it so why not accept these facts and do something to protect the people that work in this ‘sector’ making it safer for everyone involved and it would hopefully be a step towards protecting people from slavery, trafficking and abuse.

    Sex worker hires security to keep them safe? Well that’s profiting from sex work and thus pimping.

    The same is true is a sex worker is working out of rented accommodation.

    Get caught by the police? Well your money was made during a crime and thus can be seized.

    As a client you realize someone is a victim of trafficking? Well if you report or you will be convicted.

    If it’s trafficking then, it’s not the right solution.

    Cracking down on women or men who are making a conscious decision to sell their services doesn’t make any sense. It’s controlling what they do with their own bodies which is an overstep by the government. They aren’t trying to help them but control them.

    It’s just puritanical rubbish.

    Yet here we have another example of not actually giving a shit and leading by selfishness … some silly right wing cow, with a sky daddy complex, who needs to take her prejudice the fuck away from what she is trying to do. Sex work is going to happen regardless, put the legal legwork into making it safer and not so stigmatised … Alba don’t even give a fuck about the amount of kids in poverty and abusive households … the majority of their voters are folks that should be caged … what the actual fuck makes you think they care about sex trafficking?

    You don’t have to like it, nobody needs to hear, read or see you bitching and whining about it … part of being a sane, sensible, intelligent and grown arse adult, is being able to respect and keep your mouth firmly shut around the fact that other people are free to do whatever the fuck they like with their own lives.     Plus there is always the assumption that the worker (victim) is female and the client (abuser) is male! This is just wrong whilst it might be the majority there are other combinations including M/M M/F (yes lonely women do sometimes pay) F/F

    Have proper legal area/building where the workers are safe, tested, counselled with no forcing and let the police deal with the unregulated, often trafficked, other ones
