Assistants wanted for children with disabilities: “Without an assistant, our son cannot go to regular education”

1. I think that we, as society, should learn to value this type of healthcare employees, allowing them to receive a wage proportional to the great effort and service they provide. Sometimes I think that we give huge salaries to some professions (start by footballers and end with bankers for instance), which actual benefits for the society are not as real and necessary as nurses.

   I think we sometimes forget the great real importance that teachers, doctors, nurses, etc… have for our well-being, even after what happened in the pandemic. And that is not fair.

   Improving their salary and working conditions would ensure that it would be not so difficult to find nurses to help these people.

2. “Zonder assistent kan onze zoon niet naar het gewone onderwijs”

   Ok, misschien is dit dan ook een teken aan de wand dat je kind niet thuishoort in het gewone onderwijs?! Het is echt geen schande om je kind naar Bijzonder Onderwijs te sturen waar hij/zij wel de nodige zorgen krijgt door personeel die daar ook effectief voor is opgeleid.

   Mijn vrouw staat in het vijfde leerjaar en het is ronduit schrijnend hoeveel gevallen er in haar klas zitten die daar totaal niet thuishoren maar waarvan de ouders gewoon hun vingers in hun oren stoppen want “Inclusief onderwijs!!! Onze Jonas MOET en ZAL afstuderen in een ‘gewone’ school!” Met alle gevolgen van dien: Kunnen totaal niet mee in het middelbaar en hebben uiteindelijk niks geleerd.

   Elke situatie is uniek natuurlijk, en als Sander in het artikel dankzij een persoonlijke assistent gewoon onderwijs kan volgen zonder daarmee de hele klas te hypothekeren: Sure, kei goed voor hem. Maar zoals blijkt uit het artikel is dat zeker niet altijd het geval. En wie moet die extra zorg en aandacht dan op zich nemen? De klasleerkracht die zijn/haar handen al meer dan vol heeft.

3. Misschien moet een buitengewoon kind naar het buitengewoon onderwijs gaan, het is maar een idee.

   Denk dat de ouders een stigma hebben tegen buitengewoon onderwijs, ze zien het niet als evenwaardig aan “normaal” onderwijs. En ze zijn in ontkenning dat hun engeltje van een zoontje een zware handicap heeft. Jammer voor het kind.

   Government doesn’t pay footballers. You are full of shit.

5. It is sadly also not a job just anyone can do, it requires, besides specific training, also a certain person to even want to do this job.

   I personally could not see myself doing this job and I think the majority of people are simply not cut out for it aswell, as rewarding as it may be.

Me, as a person with a physical disability on the more severe side of the scale who went to a regular school in the 90’s and 00’s i, upon reading these comments can’t help but start to wonder about my impact on the teachers back then. looking back i think it all went decently enough but what do i know i was a child back then and personal bias and all that….

   i guess it heavily differs on a case by case basis. i wassmart and lucky enough to enroll into and finish higher education and i don’t know if would have had the chance to do so coming from special education…
