Hi guys, I’m a Spanish guy that moved here recently ( yesterday ) when we came out of the airport, the taxi asked for our location ( centrs ) and then gave as a fixed price of 25€.
It was kind of weird for me having a fixed price considering that the taxi-meter was there, but I didn’t really care because it seem like a fair price and hey, business is business.
Problem comes when yesterday, we went from the rock-cafe to the location in the photo. We jumped into the taxi and the price started at 6.55, he had a taxi-meter phone app ( sketchy )
The price went up aprox 20cts per second, we ended up paying 26.55€ for the trip in the photo.

Yes, you did get scammed. Im very sorry. Please use only Bolt app from now on.
Yes
that trips looks like 5-10eurs max
I don’t know what taxi you’re using, but around here just use Bolt. Prices will be relatively low, even when things are busy. Hell you can even take a Bolt scooter with this weather, even cheaper.
Yes, confirm that you got scammed. Use bolt app to not overpay. It is same as Uber.
That trip looks like under 10min walk… Just sayin’, I do not know your circumstances or disabilities.
Yes, in the most extreme case where you get the fanciest legit taxi and the traffic is the worst this would be like €10.
Airport to cents could be 25€
rock cafe to your destination is 5-10€, you did get scammed.
What service did you use?
Absolutely. General rules here, pal, avoid taxis as much as you can. Those guys will scam anyone regardless if the passenger is local or a foreigner. Use Bolt app
To scam a foreigner is a classic in nearly every country
The fixed price from the airport wasn’t a scam.
The 26 EUR trip to the cafe sounds like a scam.
For 25€ you should be able to drive for like an hour, depending on surcharges, in Rīga
Even bolt can give you such prices in moments where is lot of demand
25eur fixed from airport is actually a good deal. The prepaid official vouchers are 33.50Eur and those also only really get you to the center too. Yes you may end up with better deal than 25 with metered taxi or you may end up with significantly worse one (60-70 weren’t unheard of before vouchers got introduced), 25 for airport to center/old town is honestly fair, our airport is quite far out.
The second ride.. the total price is wrong, so while it might be a technically legal, yeah it’s a scammy practice and it’s unfortunate you’ve fallen victim of it. Bolt application is nice, that’s what the locals use.
Taxis are supposed to have the exact costs on the doors and they consist of 3 parts – fixed cost for hiring the taxi (why the meter does NOT start from 0 – but the hiring fee should be between 1 and 3 Eur typically), and then minute and kilometer cost (like.. below eur for kilometer and below 25 cents per minute would be expected). Yes there are some taxis that have ridiculous prices listed on the doors. It’s unfortunate, we all hate it. May have been a straight up scam, although those are kinda rare.
Well, it’s not exactly a scam. As you said – you stopped taxi in old-school way, and in this scenario taxi have very steep rates. The milage and time rate does increase significantly due to road-stop rather than booking it on app.
So, in terms of scam – it’s really is not that, it’s just whole industry taking advantage of tourists not knowing local market and how to “save”.
Wow, shit. Had no idea taxis are still able to scam someone. Locals use Bolt only. Asking for a price to some random taxi guy is probably seen as an inviation to scam by them
You should never take a taxi which next to airport in any country, better to use uber/bolt or any other apps, they never scam
You have to pay attention to prices listed on the door. There are some very expensive taxis in Riga. Just by the info you have given here, it is not possible to tell if you got scammed or you just paid for a very expensive taxi.
Utiliza Bolt o Fourus, we vas con el precio fijo y es mejor. Que aquí los taxistas se vienen arriba si ven que eres “turista”
Sorry you got scammed. The most ive ever paid was from rix to purvciems at 1am and that was 23eur. Like everyone said – download bolt so you dont get scammed again
I paid 15€ in Bolt to go from the airport to my hotel, a guy who took a taxi from the station paid 40€.
