This could prompt shifts in energy strategies for many countries dependent on Russian gas.
This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://novayagazeta.eu/articles/2024/08/30/ukraine-to-stop-the-transit-of-russian-gas-from-the-new-year-en-news) reduced by 53%. (I’m a bot)

> Ukraine would be willing to transit gas from other countries, such as Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, though this would require the "Appropriate logistics", where "Ukraine's transit role would be defined separately", Podolyak said in an interview with Ukrainian news outlet Noviny Live.
> While Podolyak initially said that Ukraine would also stop transiting Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline from 1 January 2025, he later walked back his statement, saying that Ukraine would "Continue to fulfil its contractual obligations" on the transit of oil until the end of 2029.
> According to the contract, Russia has to export 225 billion cubic metres of gas within five years and pay Ukraine for transit.

what will you do now hungary
Love this move – Europe should have cut off its dependence on Russian gas entirely – the fact they still buy it is directly funding the war on Ukraine. Now if only they could stop buying it through India as well would be swell.
Ukraine have been clear on this for a year now.
Bye bye 50% of Russia’s last remaining pipeline capacity to Europe.
2021 – 180bcm (billion cubic metres)
2022 – 80bcm
2023 – 40bcm
2024 – ~30bcm
2025 – 20bcm (est)
You can see why Gazprom had a loss of $5.9bn last year, and are on track to double that loss this year. <tinyviolin/>
Gazprom is pretty big in Serbia. I wonder what’s gonna happen.
Let’s wait for the next hissyfit from Orban about this.
So at least we’ll greet 2025 with a Europe practically free of Russian gas.
Is anyone else getting the vibe that Ukraine is no longer just attempting to defend itself but now taking the steps necessary to define itself as THE power of that region?
I’m not saying this is a bad thing, I’d prefer a democratic Ukraine over authoritarian Russia any day. I’m just stating that I think they have fully embraced they idea that they aren’t just a western sword, but can also become a shield of their region
Let’s hope this gets countries (like Austria which has actually increased its dependence on Russian gas since the start of the war to 98%) to actually change their gas supplier or be reminded to fear God and how terribly cold winter can be.
It’s incredible to me that Ukraine has let this flow for so long while Russia wages war on them. It should have been blown up on day one.
Why were they still allowing this, is the war conditional?
Countries have had several years to prepare and plan for it. Those who didn’t bother will have to change the hard way.
Long overdue. That NG pays for the killings of Ukrainian civilians.
How is this going to reflect on the energy costs in the EU? How many countries use this pipeline?
Unfortunately, this will not stop the gas supply to Hungary. The EU must find a way to stop the so-called Turkish Stream, which goes from Turkey through Bulgaria, Serbia to Hungary, and from there to Austria and Slovakia.
And Russia invaded to seize newly developing oil and gas fields so the tap getting turned off altogether is a huge miscalculation on criminal Putin’s part.

It’s reasonable to weigh in the defence resources you receive and the resources that are made available to Putin for attacks! Whom do you assist more? Make your mind!
I get that they have to do whatever they can to hurt Russia’s bottom line but I’m not sure how that will play with their Western European supporters.
It’s high time Europe ripped that band-aid. Should’ve been voluntary.
I don’t understand why Ukraine is still letting Russian gas transit? Shouldn’t it be shut down the day Russia invaded? Is Russia paying Ukraine while attacking them? International affairs are so weird.
As long as the prices don’t go up, sure.
TIL Ukraine has continued to allow Russian gas through.
