> That is an increase from £52,749
52,749 * 1.20 = 62,964
New law does exactly what it says it will do.
Eton warns VAT change will raise £10.5k per pupil per year from just that school…
Sounds like great news
And….
You know what?
Cut down on the Avocado toast… that should cover it, eh old chap?
If you have the – let’s face it – spare £52749 to send your kid to Eton, you can afford a little bit more. The idea that people are going to go full Will McKenzie over this is crap of the highest magnitude.
Fabulous news. Tax the living shit out of the buggers.
Shame. Not long ago the kinds of mp’s educated at Eton were suggesting the rest of us folk should just ‘not buy cheese’ as the prices of day to day items had risen so high. Guess now they’ll have to join us lowly peasants in ‘just not buying ‘ cheese. That should cut it!
Such a shame….
An actual luxury item gets taxed
So an extra £10k to the country for each toff at Eton.
Sounds good to me.
These comments are hilarious. They could make it 40% and I’d still pay it to keep my kids away from the great unwashed
This private education tax is a strange one.
A person sends kids to private school. That kid isn’t going to free school saving the government money.
Surely there are other places we can tax them at
Luxury goods tax
cars over 100k add a extra 10% on
TVs over £1500 extra 10%
Jacket that’s 1k add 10% (although manufacturers can absorb that)
I’m sure with the technology we have these days alot of that is actually doable
Eton would likely come on top, they would able to chargeback VAT on nearly all goods and services they purchase.
Smaller schools on the other hand would likely not be so fortunate.
Good thing there’s been 14 years of upwards movement of wealth speedrunning to prepare the poor souls
Thread’s a bit salty isn’t it… I don’t think anyone of those “affected” care one bit.
So it’s gone up from £50,000 to £60,000.
Just think of all them working class kids that are now priced out of going to Eton. I hope you’re happy with yourselves Labour!!!
Yes, let’s tax education! I know it is easy to go for ‘Eton’ or any other private school – fuck the rich – but the truth is that we should look to ensure our state schools prize rigour and aspiration just the same, and the soft skills and resilience that these arseholes have in buckets.
Maybe if they bought fewer coffees and avocados they could afford it
I think a lot of comments are missing the point here. Not every parent is a billionaire or foreign royalty. The parents sending their children to these schools not long ago were doctors, accountants, pharmacists aswell as lord and the like. Pricing out the middle class isn’t going to lead to more equality for the working class. For a Saudi billionaire it’s literally chump change, this price hike. Also these schools often provide bursaries and scholarships for children who’s parents can’t afford the fees. If you want greater equality, make the state education incredibly attractive, so much so that private schools lose their purpose.
Oh no, who now is going fight the school grizzly bear & get nailed to the wall on St Tadger’s Day?
Where’s that Jeremy Clarkson ‘Oh no!’ Gif when you need it.
Next they will be trying to convince us that those people paying 50k per year simply cannot afford 60k and *will move their children to state schools as a result*.
Eton shouldn’t just pay VAT, they should also pay a Thick Cunt Tax for the utter fucking spoons that have went through their education system and then taken up high office to royally ass fuck the country.
