How Berlin was displayed in the German Democratic Republic (DDR)

  1. In 1990 they sent me to a district in East Berlin that wasn’t on the map they gave me. I expected to improve the infrastructure of a small town and found a fully developed city. Nice job done here!

  2. My understanding was that the British and the French handed over their quarters of Berlin to merge with the Russian quarter/DDR. Why does this look like just over half the city if it just was the American quarter? Am I mistaken?

  3. West germany wasn’t displayed in detail (or often even with incorrect details on purpose) by east german maps, so it was harder for people to workout fleeing routes. This was part of the oppressive government style of east Germany.

  4. The comrade who came up with the idea was probably lauded by saving as much printer ink as the white blob was large. Brilliant move, increasing efficiency of the map-making department under the 5-year plan while complying with politburo instructions.
