Going ‘green’ in the U.K. (specifically emission free power, transport and electrification of industry. Along with offsetting and sequestering through rewilding etc). Absolutely shouldn’t cost anyone poor in the U.K. a penny.
It’s been a great tactic of the fossil fuel companies and right wing media to make it seem like a green agenda is going to be far to expensive. But done correctly it will have minimal cost implications (and any it does have can easily be shielded from consumers).
The U.K. remains one of the best placed economies to enact a green deal that actually increases GDP. At a time when other countries would face a retraction of GDP due to climate impacts,
In the long run, not going green is also going to cost them. Running a petrol/diesel car in ten years time is going to be extortionate and I expect there will be extra taxes on such vehicles. There is no way for the poor to win and the government must be aware of this on some level. The fact that this can be used to delay green measures is a happy coincidence and a bit of good PR for the government though, so you can bet they will run with it.
