  2. Csaba G. Toth’s data is great, but I’m not sure if” countryside” refers just to rural areas or to the rest of the country outside Budapest in general

    anyway, the decline has been rapid, especially this year

    births in Hungary are down by 10.1% in Jan-July 2024 vs Jan-July 2023, including a whopping 18% decline in June

    its also the fastest rate of decline so far this year in all of Europe and one of the fastest in the world

    The railway system is collapsing, from all scheduled trains, more than 60% are late based on a recent stat.

    The economic minister is surprised about “why dont people spend money”, while not realizing that the majority of people have no money to spend.

    And the funniest, they sacrificed lots of things to urge childbirth, they introduced packages for married couples that rewarded making children with money and 0% interest loans for housing.

    Ultimately, it made housing prices skyrocket, so it f..ed a lots of young people wanting to buy a small first home, because its now unaffordable, and seems like, it was for nothing, based on this data…

  6. I’m afraid this is because young people are moving out and old people are moving in. Real estate prices in Budapest are catastrophically high, IIRC Budapest has one of the highest ratios of old people. Because only old people – often foreigners – can buy those stupidly expensive homes.

    And the recent building boom won’t help because more stupidly expensive homes are built. More old people, more young people moving out.

  9. Because empty houses owned by Chinese investors and Airbnbs rarely reproduce.

    Our city was stolen from us by global capital, same as almost any other popular tourist destination.

    I sincerely hope that the frustrated citizens of Barcelona and Mallorca will succeed and start a global trend, it is insane that young people will never be able to own property in their homeland and we just have to deal with it.

    – introduce policies to support couples with young children and incentivise childbirth
    – birthrates quickly bounce back
    – a few years later birthrates suddenly plummet even further down than ever before

    now Hungary

    the only explanation I heard is the calendar effect – couples that have been on the fence about having children or were planning to do that later decided to do it now that the policies are introduced
    but that means they wont have children later so its like taking out a loan

  16. The main cause is young people, young families moving to the agglomeration of Budapest. Those cities are booming, Budapest is shrinking. Naturally, young people have kids there. If was accelerated my Covid when working from home became viable.

    I lived in Budapest since birth, had a kid. Moved to a town in the agglomeration just outside Budapest city limits, had three more kids last 6 years. They don’t count as Budapest births.

  19. Well, the explanation is pretty obvious. Cost of living is through the roof for the average Hungarian. It’s unlikely you’ll ever be able to afford your own place. State-funded health care and education are also being run to the ground at the moment – two things that would be essential for people to want to have kids.
