  1. I wish so. I heard people are dying there working damned too hard.

  2. I’ve got a 4 day work week and it’s life changing. Especially after coming from a 6 day work week.

  3. Pretty sure it’s not up to the employees themselves how many days a week they work.

  4. If the hardworking Japanese can do 4 day weeks surely the US can go to 2 day weeks right?

  5. Best schedule I ever worked was 9/80. Work 80 hours in nine days. Every other Friday off. It was great.

  6. Expectation: Japan goes to 4 day weeks. People have kids, get lives, etc.

Likely reality: Japan goes to 4 day weeks with at least a day of unpaid overtime. Nothing changes.

They’re attempting to solve the symptom, not the cause. It’s ultimately a cultural issue and the only way to solve it is to address it as such.

  7. Japanese are known to be the least productive of the G7 countries when looking at time in office versus work output. So much of this is face time and not actual work being done.

  8. Looks like the rest of the world will just have to play catch up to Japan’s work-life balance game.

  9. That’s the right direction, unlike another Asian country that’s awarding some kegel shxt 🙄

  10. I’ve done 4/9 (36 hours/week), it’s really nice

  11. If you have to work less, maye you can try fucking more?
    – the government

  12. Japan actually coming up with good ideas here.

Now don’t make the 4 days 16 hours long, because that would be counterproductive.

  13. one of the pandemic’s silver lining an extra 2 hours a day in return for 3 day weekends has been a great morale booster for many at the company i work at. 2 days is realistically not enough time to do anything other than catching up on errands and sleep

  14. Japan’s pushing for a 4 day workweek? That sounds like a game changer! Imagine having an extra day to unwind or explore. Could be the perfect mix of productivity and personal time….

  15. I’m starting a job soon that’s 7 days 12 hours shift and 7 days off.

  16. I work 4 x 12hr nights, 3 off, 3 x 12hr days, 1 off, 3 x 12hr nights, 3 off, 4 x 12hr days, 7 days off then repeat. It seemed very daunting during the interview process but after nearly a year in the schedule I’m not sure I could go back to a normal work schedule. 4 on 3 off would be nice though.

  17. Inb4 the fifth day is not required but ‘heavily encouraged’ and results in nothing but less pay as work culture pressures them into doing their best for the business. In addition to the standard after work drinking and ‘networking’ for hours.

  18. Except for anime studios. They gotta keep making anime content quickly and release on time!

  19. Nothing will change. Most people would still come in on Friday for “overtime” because they’re “hardworking and dedicated to the company” and applicants would be automatically rejected if they’re not willing to work overtime. You can change laws but you can’t change the people and the culture.

  20. 4/10s is a rough 4 days. If you have kids or a wife that works too this is not a good time.

  21. Good luck convincing a country famous for working itself to the brink that taking time off won’t lead to the apocalypse.

  22. With the extra time off the Japanese can create, watch and participate in more crazy hobbies and game shows.

  23. My sister works 12 hours a day 3 days a week at a hospital, plus a half day at home doing paperwork. Even working 40 hours a week, a 4 day workweek makes it a lot easier for her.

  24. Wants to. That’s the keyword. This will never happen.

  25. What? We are adhering to 7 day workweek here with sundays sometimes free.

  26. Yes please! I work in public education and probably have it better than most workers here in Japan, but there are days when it’s pretty exhausting.

  27. This strategy might even lead to a baby boom for Japan 🙂

  28. 4 day work week is a target, but we need to make it possible for people working one job to afford at least rent a place to live and eat healthy.
Because right now, maybe all of them would just work their second job anyway.

  29. It’s better late than never.

Meanwhile in China, the CCP is encouraging companies to set even longer work hours than their current 9-9-6 standard. (9am to 9pm, 6 days a week) as if the suicide rate isn’t high enough already.

  30. Please get China and Korea to do this too. They’re too intense and I can’t keep up with 996

  31. What about non hardworking Japanese citizens? Discrimination!!
