Covid rules are to be axed in England, but is pandemic’s end really in sight?

  1. I’m in Thailand at the moment

Posters went up last week about the transition from ‘new normal’ to ‘*next normal*’

Now although that phrasing is cringe/shudder inducing, it really does seem to be wrapping up here.

They’re even in talks about bringing back Songkran, which if you don’t know is essentially every city having its own Glastonbury sized waterfight festival.

Since Omicron became the main variant, there’s only been one death.

Let’s just hope another worse variant isn’t around the corner.

  2. No, because this isn’t a virus that’s going to go extinct. It’s probably been around for a very long time, because it’s very successful at infecting living hosts. Now that its got literally billions of people as a nice new pool of hosts to infect, it’s probably going to be with us forever until modern science can prevent viruses from infecting us.

Omicron and it’s sub variants and whatever variants come next are going to be more infectious and spread much faster, perhaps be less severe but it will continue to evolve to be more successful – thus increasing its natural R0 number. Vaccines and boosters are massively helping keep this disease from spiralling out of control, the way I see it is that it’s probably a bit too soon to just rip the tablecloth out from under the silverware.

Internationally, there are no where near enough people vaccinated and nowhere near enough people have access to antiviral treatments/post exposure prophylaxis to combat the global spread. Let’s be real here, this is a global problem. If the virus goes “endemic” in one country, sooner or later, it *could* be back to the drawing board again if a variant emerges that has developed in a country with little vaccine protection.

  3. I’m in Spain and I think the only rule left is masks in indoor public spaces. That’s about it. Most people over 5 years old are vaccinated now.
