Help my router says DSL is not working. Do I have to take off this cover before plugging in the cable?

  1. Unlikely. There are two more TAE outlets hidden under that cover, but typically, a DSL plug goes in the middle. Both, plug and outlet are F-coded, a second “F” outlet would mean a second line.

Hey, give it a shot, it can’t harm, maybe the installer made a mistake. It won’t plug into a “N”-coded outlet.

  2. Could it be that the plug not get into the cable box?
Than it could be that you must get off the nose of the plug, with a knife, to get plug in the box.
Otherwise yes it could be that in the box, the cable are false connected.

  3. Before cutting anything, check the content of the box. Maybe that there is an alternative cable that you can use. Normally the grey cable with a telephone plug on one side is the right one.

  4. Make sure everything is plugged in properly (read the manual). Use the “1. TAE”. If this is the only telephone outlet it might be the 1. TAE.
After establishing the physical connection (phone cord and electricity) look if the DSL is “synced” (read the manual). Some status LEDs on the router might blink or show a steady light. Connect your computer the the router. Use a network cable, not WiFi. Go to the router’s setting webpage and look what it does. Follow the steps to fill in the passcodes you got from your provider (read the manual, follow the steps shown on your router’s webpage).
Remember, if the DSL connection is established (sync) the line is good. If you can’t establish a connection to the internet there might be a problem with your passcodes, your LAN or your computer.
And don’t open any outlets (phone or especially power outlets) without knowing what you’re doing! You may risk your life.
