‘Help lost trespassers’: Natural England issues new guidelines for farmers

  1. I’m happy about this.

I like to take new routes and sometimes paths aren’t as clear as they could be, or the OS map doesn’t match reality (shout out to the OS app btw).

I usually have a bin liner on me to collect rubbish, so farmers I do meet tend to be friendly, especially when I explain that I am a lost idiot, but still.

  2. >only shoot dogs as a last resort.

Any dog off a lead near livestock is a danger to said livestock, and so shooting it is reasonable.

    Everything else is sensible though.

  3. What really would help is if Farmers stopped blocking rights of way so we didn’t have to wander about trying to get back onto a path again. I could also leave my bolt cutters and saw at home which would be nice.

  4. My attitude to trespassers is defined by the trespasser those genuinely lost are always helped but it must be noted I work long thankless hours and by nature I am an arsehole, I spare the public from this by isolating myself on private land should you come and find me don’t be surprised if I am less than cordial

  5. As a countryside walker I do think this an issue, some farmers don’t want you on their land and get angry when you loose path, problem is the farmers make it stupidly hard to stay on the path! If they just made it more clear with better signage then both sides would be happier.

I know the farmers get mad and say we should use maps etc but even with map it can be hard to stay on track. Both sides need to give a little and IMO the farmers should make it as easy as possible for us walkers to stay on the path
