Its like how most kickstarters and “gofundmes” are chancers who want some beer and weed tokens, only this is on a more industrial scale.
Not really a big surprise, “charities” in the UK are being used as a huge legal scam, have been for years.
There’s a saying in Germany, charity is a failure of government, there should be no need for charities in one of the richest countries in the world
I know this is going against the grain here – but if you were a grifter looking to enrich yourself you wouldn’t setup a charity. There are social enterprises and community interest groups and various other methods of creating organizations that you can pay yourself with.
Charities have lots of rules and lots of auditing.
To me it seems more likely that they just didnt understand how charities work. They are very difficult to setup, as the trustees, workers, and benefactors should all be different people.
What this tends to mean is normal people find starting chairities basically impossible. You need independent wealth involved somewhere.
This report doesn’t state any wrongdoing took place, so I imagine we need the details of what they charged the chairty. Using your own consulting firm to do things for your charity at market value or above is incredibly dodgy. But doing it at 20% discount?
It could be dodgy yes, or it could really just be the teething problems associated with setting up charities. A single minimum wage full time worker costs about 15k and you cant run a charity with one worker.
Hopefully they will get everything in order.
