Georg “Katsche” Schwarzenbeck, played for us his entire career, was a starter for most of it, was the guy to sit behind so that Beckenbauer could make his stuff, scored an insane goal in the first CL final we ever played which lead to us winning it. But unlike the big names of Beckenbauer, Gerd, Maier, Hoeneß or Breitner he rarely gets mentioned or appreciation.
Dante
probably an idiotic take, because he’s not THE most underrated anyways: Lewandowski
After his (admittedly weird) exit, I’ve seen lots of people talk shit about him, as if he didn’t break one of the most legendary records in our league, had the iconic 5 in 9, and played almost 400 games for us
don’t wna seem overly critical but underrated by who? if by outsiders it’ll be müller no doubt but if it’s by our fanbase i would say javi martínez/mario mandzukic. but again i’m rather young so probably not the widest range of players to choose from 😅
Christian Ziege… Scored quite a bit considering his position and the different style of play back in the late 90’s compared to today.
Honorary mentions – Roy Makaay, Sebastian Deisler and Mehmet Scholl
Thomas Muller. There were points over the last couple of seasons when his stats were very close to De Bruynes in terms of goal contributions but he didn’t even get 1/3 the attention.
Georg Schwarzenbeck
Honorable mention to Dieter Hoeness (also for being overshadowed by his brother for the last 40+ years)
Hard one, so many come to mind. I’m just gonna go with the first ones and not claim that this is the correct take.
Bixente Lizarazu and Roy Makaay
Thiago.
What he brought to our game was appreciated the most when we no longer had it.
The problem with doing this grid here is that Thomas Muller has a fair shout at five or six different squares
Paul Breitner rarely gets his flowers when you think about that dominant generation.
Lucio
Depends if you mean underrated at Bayern or overall
Mario Gomez
Thiago.
Patrik Andersson
2 seasons, 4 titles, and 1 moment of absolute magic
Someone already said Mandzukic so I will say Olic
Thomas Müller. While he has gotten a lot of recognition in the last few years, it isn’t enough. He should be held as one of the very best of his generation. Above Iniesta and just under Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi (but don’t let their fanbois hear that haha).
Also Thiago. We didn’t get as much as we could from him given his late switch to the 6 position and injuries, but people still fail to appreciate how much we lost when he left. Kimmich is not even a shadow of what he was as a 6.
Giovanni Elber – great player, instrumental in 2001 CL win, never praised by today‘s fans
We can rule out the ones that get upvoted, right?
Michael Ballack
Best player over his 4-year stint, 3 doubles with fairly mediocre squads
If underrated is underappreciated – its Mario Gomez. He actually was such an incredible pure striker.
Bixente Lizarazu
As a left-back, Lizarazu was both defensively solid and offensively dangerous. Despite being part of a very successful Bayern team, he is often overshadowed by other defenders of his era. His contributions on both ends of the pitch were crucial, yet he doesn’t always get the recognition he deserves compared to some of his more famous teammates.
Thiago
klose
Rafinha
Toni Kroos without a doubt. Sold one of the best German football players of all time for 25 Mio bucks. That’s ridiculous, even for the price standards back then.
I think Tom Starke doesn’t get the recognition he deserve. Not sure that qualifies as underrated though.
Christian Ziege
Was more of a left midfielder or left full back than an actual winger and still scored more goals than Leroy Sane or Kingsley Coman
He wasn’t exactly underrated at the time, but **zé Roberto** played for Bayern at two points during his career and iirc he was a consistent starter both times, first on the wing and then in central midfield next to Mark van Bommel.
