This will be a huge part of Merkels disastrous legacy. Everyone with half a brain saw this coming. But no, Angie had to quit nuclear and build a pipeline to be more dependent on Russia.

There’s no point raging at the rabid dog. We all know how it will act. Rage at the family member who led it to your house and then locked you in the room with it.
Thanks, Germany.
>Two participants in Thursday’s Council meeting on energy said that Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki advocated launching an investigation to “sober up Gazprom” and teach it a lesson. The idea won backing from Italy and the Netherlands in lower-level meetings earlier this week, though Germany is strongly opposed, one EU diplomat said.
Oh look, Germany still defending their master Putin like a good lapdog, even as he fucks the whole continent over.
But this will speed up decarbonization and in the long term will be negative for Russia. But that’s modern Russia. If there is a way to make the wrong decision, they will find it.
The smart play for Putin would be to make supply easy for Europe. Keep them happy and hooked on your product and give them no incentive to change.
This is like a dealer beating up his addicts. Eventually they will find another dealer, or worse get clean.
Is this Europe’s arrogance? Russia is selling more to China a key ally, why would a nation being sanctioned help its punisher?

Poland does have a point there.

>Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told the European Parliament: “While Gazprom has honored its long-term contracts with us, it did not respond to higher demand as it did in previous years.” She lamented that “this makes us vulnerable,” and called for efforts to diversify suppliers.
You can distrust and criticize VdL as much as you want, but I think this is a positive sign.
Russa is really trying everything to lose even the last supporters inside the EU. I don’t understand why, but I don’t have to.
EU was wanting free gas market, EU get free gas market and now EU fuked up by free gas market, but somehow its Russia fault.
This misinformation keeps doing rounds on this sub on a daily basis when it lacks any substance. Countries contract Gazprom to deliver a certain amount of gas to them each month at a fee. Gazprom is delivering this amount to those countries/gas companies exactly as contracted every month. If a company wants additional gas, it can make an order outside the contract and every single company or country that has made & paid for that order has been delivered the exact amount on the spot market.
What more do people want Gazprom to actually do? Do we send European countries free gas beyond their contracted Bcm’s? There is an energy crunch going around and Europe is competing against Asia. China was literally suffering from powercuts and everyone is trying to order gas they can get for an anticipated cold winter.
If anyone has an idea of what Russia/Putin should do, please suggest it.
The only way for Europe to gain sovereignty is by going full renewable.
Never heard Putin saying “Russia is experiencing economical problems because Europe does not invest enough into Russia. They should do more to prove they’re reliable partner.”
Nordstream 2? Never heard of it, I’m pretty sure it doesn’t exist.

I dont understand this one honestly. Russia is following it’s contracts, meanwhile sending the rest of the oil to a rich asian market that pays more (alongside filling up their own reserves). Isn’t this what capitalism and free market is about?
Besides, a number of EU nations broke long-term contracts with Gasprom saying “we will pay for Russian gas for a very cheap market price because it will not get higher” instead of keeping the contracts, and NOW they are acting like its our fault for not selling gas continuously to an unstable market???
