Why it is essential for Ukraine to free Crimea

Crimea has strategic value and continues to be a critical battleground in the war in Ukraine, a former commander of US Army Europe has said.

Forces News spoke with Lieutenant General (Retired) Ben Hodges and asked why Ukraine must liberate Crimea.

He said: “I think that Crimea is still the decisive terrain of this war and I think the Ukrainians are going to continue isolating Crimea by destroying these ferries.

“And when the time is right, they’re going to drop that bridge.”

Additionally, they are constantly targeting Russian Navy and Air Force assets in Crimea, making it increasingly difficult for Russia to use the region strategically.

The liberation of Crimea would be a significant blow to Russia, as it would disrupt their dominance in the Black Sea region.

Control of Crimea is essential for Russia to exert influence in the Black Sea and beyond, while its loss would prevent Russia from disrupting shipping in and out of Ukrainian ports.

The impact of this situation extends beyond Ukraine, affecting European refugees, global food and energy supplies, and commodity prices.

Therefore, the Crimea issue is not limited to its strategic value but also has far-reaching economic and political implications.

  1. Yeah taking Crimea back would be nice, but realistically it is not going to happen without strategic change in war (ie NATO getting hand on involved). Making it unusable for Russia is a different and more realistic goal.

  2. Ukraine doesn't have to take down the bridge, just interdict the approaches. The railway is the key link and continually taking out a few culverts on the approaches will disrupt the line enough to make in unviable as a main supply link.

  8. Ukraine ONLY control crimea due to Lenin’s organisation of the Soviet Union. Ukraine has no cultural, historical or political ties to Ukraine. Let’s just be honest. Taking crimea is khcb more about suffocating Russia than it is that Ukraine has the right to it.

  11. For those of you in Rio Linda. Crimea is a peninsula on the black sea. It was forever Russian territory. Of course for military strategy.
    Crimea, was ALWAYS full of Russian speaking, Russian families. Since before the Tsar.
    More so after RUSSIA WON!!! Won, against Germany, and kicked the you know who’s out of the eastern side of Ukraine and settled there. Because they won. Get it? To the victor the spoils.
    The west….did NOT kick the you know who’s out of the western side of Ukraine. Hence all the friction with the many mixed races in Crimea and the Donbas.
    The west, had a hard-on for Russia after the war because the war mongers saw the $$$$$ that could eventually be made, making Russia the heal for 70 plus years. (Championship wrestling)
    Crimea was always Russian, until in 57? Or so….Chruschev the Ukrainian….(the guy after Stalin…who was Georgian) GAVE…Gave Crimea to the Ukrainians.
    Without, resettling those Russians…there in.
    See, it’s easier….to just issue a decree. Then it is to actually help the situation.

  13. This video is quite stale. Ben Hodges was spot on until Ukraine changed the game with sea drones and drove the Russian fleet out of the Black Sea (back to Russian ports).
