Hello guys.
On British news today (in particular the LBC news) there is information that Estonia is looking into renting out their prison spaces. Allegedly as your prisons are relatively empty, and ours is packed the UK government is looking into sending our prisoners to you. I have to admit as someone from the Baltics I see this as an issue. It would hurt me if Latvia did the same considering the horrible state of UK right now. 10,074 knife crimes in London to date THIS YEAR. Another issue I see is that convicts family would most likely have to visit and might not be of good character as well as I am not sure what would happen at the end of the prison term? Surely there are more risks than rewards? What do you think ?

  1. I doubt the convicts familys will make the trip here, it is not that cheap. And if their term ends, they will go back to britain.

  2. Yeah, if those people would be released in Estonia then that idea would be fucked. Visiting could also be a problem, did not think about it. What if terrorist Muhammed is visited by his brother, also an Islamist…sounds like “tourists” I don’t want to see

  3. Not a great idea, the logistics of it alone would be mindfuck.

  4. Hell no, why can’t such a powerful nation deal with their own prisoners? We don’t want our reputation to be as Europe’s rubbish bin.

  5. After they have done their time, they will be deported back to UK, as they don’t have residence permit. I guess their feet will never touch Estonian soil outside airport and prison territory. Visiting relatives can visit Estonia anyway.

Worrying is that during Estonian prison time they will get friends with local criminals, what might result into some kind of international crime in future. But I think it would attract rather our criminals to visit or move to UK, instead of UK criminals wanting to move to Estonia.

  6. We don’t support, as it can help them get new acquaintances here, and therefore raise transnational organized crime. That’s like Erasmus for cons. Do we really need it?

  7. We had huge crime rates and now we have low crime rates. We still have the prisons that were needed in the past. Housing screened prisoners from the UK and keeping them apart from the others seems like a good use for these now unused prisons.

  8. We have maybe 500 places available. Wont help that much. And cost (3000€ per prisoner for month) is calculated based on our own expenses. Half of it is salaries.

If it is going to happen then prison guards will be british too. That will probably drive the price up. Not sure if it will be profitable.

It does sound however like the Rwanda asylum plan – lot of money will go to somewhere and in the end there will be no result.

  9. yes, why not, im sure they will not send really bad criminals here. maybe minor offences?
