Boris Johnson regretted backing Brexit, says No 10 spin doctor

  1. > “He knows he’s f***** up massively. Now he’s working out how to get himself out of the mess.”

He obviously didn’t work very hard, which tbf is plausible for him

  2. Bullshit.

Boris was one of the leading architects of the anti-EU sentiment in the UK.

He spent ten years lying about the EU banning prawn cocktail crisps or bendy bananas in his columns and then ran screaming into the referendum any lie he could to paint them as the bad guys.

This is aimed at trying to distance Boris from Brexit now the Tories have realised how badly its fucking us.

  3. ahh they are gearing up for a doublethink now brexit is not working. We have always been at war against eurasia and Brexit was caused by the last labour government

  4. Boris’ hero–Churchill spent a significant portion of his life running away from money problems. I don’t know what the PM is running away from, but it’s a bit tiring.

  5. I don’t think Boris was intrinsically anti EU. He just wrote those articles because he is essentially lazy, it was a bit of fun, and he’s a buffoon.

I think he wanted to appear to be a Brexiteer in order to win the support of that wing of the Tory party in his bid to lead them.

Then when leave lost the referendum he would win the leadership contest straddling both wings of the party as a pro Brexit PM, yet one who had accepted the will of the people and would work to improve our relationship with Brussels. It would have been a cynical manipulation of both sides of the argument and could have shut the brexiteers up and settled the debate for quite some time.

Only they didn’t lose. And he’s been dealing with the fallout ever since, something to which he, and his cabinet, are tragically ill equipped.

  6. I said all along, we’ll know how badly Brexit is going when Boris starts distancing himself from it.

I will say now that putting Rees-Mogg in front of the bus as “Brexit Benefits Minister” is an excellent move of self-preservation by Boris. Rees-Mogg would Boris’ main rival for leadership, outing him as weak and ineffective (there *are no “*Brexit Benefits”) so much that he can’t even make a success about the thing he’s been piping on about for twenty years is effectively weakening him as a challenger.

  7. My favourite quote this year.

“Can we stop going on about this “party” and talk about all of Boris’ successes since 2019.”

    *long silence*

  8. This is how it starts. Rumors that he never actually liked Brexit.

That way, when he’s launched from office, the Brexiteers can blame all of the problems on “not having a true believer in charge”. Brexit as a concept is perfect, the execution was bad was because Boris didn’t believe in it.

They will of course ignore the fact that he was the head of the leave campaign.

  9. The major misconception is that he believes in something. He only believes in himself and saw campaigning for Leave as self promotion. If he backed remain he would not have stood out as much.

  10. Probably regrets it because its too much like hard work and his fantasy about being prime minister revolves around everyone liking him, doing what he says and letting him do whatever he wants

  11. Dumb American here who’s interested in UK politics but doesn’t know much so take it easy on me. But don’t you guys have the ability to get rid of your leaders at anytime unlike here where we’re stuck with them for 4 years? Also, could the UK ever rejoin the EU?

  12. Boris will do whatever he thinks will help him be popular. Remember, when he was a kid, he wanted to be the king of the world, he always wanted to be in a position of power.

If you look at his history, he’s been working in the European Commission in the past, he comes from an EU supporting family. He perhaps temporarily broke from family tradition just to get the votes needed to push him into power.

Why does he regret this now? Maybe because his popularity has dropped due to the parties at No. 10, high inflation, stock shortages, labour constraints, semiconductor shortages, high fuel prices… which some people blame solely on Brexit despite being a global problem.

Therefore, he doesn’t want to lose votes. He wants to stay in power for as long as possible.

  13. “We were only calling valid doubts ‘Project Fear’ ironically”

Followed by “We always knew it would be a disaster”

Followed by “There is no end game, why would you expect us to have reasons?”

  14. > Boris Johnson regretted backing Brexit, says No 10 spin doctor

Apparently not a very smart spin doctor then. Because if PM regrets about his decision he is even worse in the forecasting of the situation. So somehow spin doctor managed to get the perceived situation even worse for PM. I mean – well done.

  15. Oh fuck off did he. This is the man who lied about the EU regularly to get ahead as a journalist.

This is one of the chief architects of Brexit trying to save some face now that the cost of living crisis is being made so much more acute in the UK by Brexit than it is anywhere else.

He knows the mob is coming. Metaphorically at this point, and he wants to be away from it before it becomes a real one.

  16. As Heseltine once said: “Boris waits to see the way the crowd is running and then dashes in front”.

The appetite for Brexit was there, so Boris made sure he was front and centre of it.

  17. This only means that things are going to get worse and he is distancing himself in advance to protect his ass.

  18. Fuck boris. Fuck the tories. Fuck brexit. All a fuck nugget of shit and I hope they all fuck off from whence they came.

Fuck them with a big fucking stick.

  19. He deserves to be lumped with it, and blamed for it. He lied and lied and lied and use Brexit for his own gains. I hope it’s his downfall also.

  20. Johnson stated his red lines around trade, promoting a soft Brexit in the lead up to the vote, and then backtracked on everything, using the ethereal nonsense of that ill defined piece of crap referendum, lying and backstabbing the country, changing what he meant by Brexit, using it as leverage against May and her far better if still shit deal, resulting in his abysmal leadership and the complete crock of shit he delivered and didn’t even read, that’s causing us endless hurt for no benefit.

Crocodile tears from a complete charlatan.

  21. Yeah, he regretted it sooooo much he broke parliamentary law to get it through the commons. Boy he really must hate Brexit.

  22. >The new No 10 spin doctor said back in 2018 that he would be a “hugely divisive figure” if he became Tory leader and also referred to him being “sexually incontinent”.

  23. People also forget that for a while, he was absolutely anti Brexit and campaigned against it, despite his previous EU bashing. He even gave interviews that evicerated Brexit, as it would be a “Herculean error”. How do I know? I was there when he was doing the interview (it was a ad hock interview, I was just working at the venue).

When public opinion pushed towards Brexit (regardless of if they wished to vote out, or remainders who believed the public had spoken so they must follow through), he very rapidly switched sides. Became one of the biggest proponents of the movement. There are some old interviews online where he rallied against Brexit, most have disappeared. Funny that.

    Edit: Spelling.
