Ättestupa (Scandinavian ritualistic suicide cliff) in Trolldalen nature reserve, Dalarna Sweden

  1. According to legend there was a tradition during Scandinavian prehistory in which elderly people who were no longer able to provide for themselves jumped of a cliff to their death, sometimes with a little help if they would not cooperate. These cliffs were called “ättestupor”.

    While there is no proof these ritualistic sucides actually happened there are several cliffs around Sweden that according to folklore were used for this. This one is located in a nature reserve called Trolldalen (Troll Vally) in Dalarna, Sweden.

    Since I did not want to die in a selfie accident the second photo out over the edge is a little underwhelming but trust me jumping would not be a good idea.

    The remaining pictures shows the climb up which goes past a stone formation that according to legend were used as a church by trolls.
