Under 50 spare places left in male prisons

1. ***The Telegraph reports:***

   The number of spare prison places [in male jails](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/08/27/only-100-places-male-prisons/) fell below 50 on Monday – the lowest number on record.

   A [surge in the number of inmates](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/09/06/prison-population-record-high-influx-rioters/) to a record high of 88,521 in England and Wales means the prison service has come closer than ever to running out of space.

   Without [the early release of 1,750 prisoners](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/09/07/prisons-coaches-unprecedented-early-release/) on Tuesday, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) would have been likely to have had to trigger additional emergency measures.

   The 1,750 offenders – including some convicted of violence, as well as some domestic abusers – are due to be freed 40 per cent of the way [through their sentences](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/07/07/prisoners-serve-40-per-cent-sentence-to-beat-overcrowding/) rather than halfway.

   The MoJ has already activated [Operation Early Dawn](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/08/19/emergency-measures-prison-overcrowding-activated/), under which defendants are kept in police cells until prison spaces become available.

   It would be very entertaining to have that kind of reality show with real world consequences, and the ad revenue from the show can go towards building more prisons.

10. You know what’s not helping mentioning it every day, I’m pretty sure there’s idiots out there that will use that as an excuse to be a cunt and say 

    “what are they gonna do put me in prison there’s no space left anyway”

    This time, with actual bad things and not ‘Oi Dave-o shrimps on da Barbie yo!’.

12. Close all but one female prison and then reopen as male prisons. So many women in prison unnecessarily

13. If this was seating places in the subsidised restaurant in the Houses of Parliament, you know the builders would be there already.
