That would be like 60e for 4 people dinner with beer. Much cheaper compared today for Finland.
When Finland switched from Finnish Marks to Euros, the conversion rate was 1€ = 5,94573 FIM. Thus, that bill would be 62,57€ with direction conversion. However, that doesn’t account for inflation. With inflation adjustment, that bill would have been be roughly 103€ in 2023 (see https://stat.fi/tup/laskurit/rahanarvonmuunnin.html).
We can’t use a conversion rate of 1999 or 2002 when Finland switched to Euro.
It comes to 103,35€ converted to today’s money. (Well last year to be pedantic)
I think a similar setting today would cost somewhere between 130 to 200 € depending on the restaurant. Then again, the fanciest places in Kokkola won’t be anywhere close to the fanciest places in Helsinki, at least in terms of price.
Just over 100€ with correct conversion rate from https://stat.fi/tup/laskurit/rahanarvonmuunnin.html
Relatively cheap restaurant, per 1995 standards.
Beer = 18 FIM, fish 60 FIM.
This is very important piece of history because this proves that not everything was cheap even back then
Id say this bill would be around 200 euros now, those dishes aren’t cheap, and judging by the dishes they serve this restaurant wasn’t cheap either.
Interesting that the beers are 0.4 litres. Back in 1995 the usual sizes were either 0.33 or 0.5. The smaller 0.4 started showing up more often in the early 2000’s
As for the price of beer, 18 mk sounds about right for a restaurant and the year. You could still get cheap 10 – 12 mk pints in Kallio around 2001, but around the Helsinki city center the prices were around 20 – 25 mk (5 – 6,30 € in today’s money, adjusted for inflation).
Bout 100€, but that was still affordable. Nowadays it would be like 200
Replace that with the euro and thats what I spend at espresso house for a less than mid rye bread sandwich and mediocre coffee
I loved that place! They had a location in Seinäjoki as well. We went there once a month with my mom, I would always order a minute steak with garlic butter and fries. Don’t remember the price, but I’m sure it was relatively cheap, because we could afford it.
Big mac meal was around 30 marks at the time, cheeseburger was 5,- and double cheeseburger was 10,- (kymppihän RIIITTÄÄ!).
Also, in 1999 happyhour at my favorite (cheapest) place in Helsinki was 10 marks for a 0,4l pint.
So those are super duper affordable, as Kantarelli’s was considered somewhat classy place.
Nice find! Brought back so many fond and tasty memories🥲

[Instead we’ll use a handy calculator that takes into account inflation, both before and after the Euro.](https://stat.fi/tup/laskurit/rahanarvonmuunnin.html)

According to [this website](https://stat.fi/tup/laskurit/rahanarvonmuunnin_en.html).
1FIM = 0,28€ in 1995
Edit to add:
372FIM in 1995 is 103,35€ in 2023
75FIM / 4 beer is = 5,21€ per bottle tuborg beer.
Not so cheap
Paid 120€ for a fancy two person room in that hotel in 2014
4 main courses and beers for pretty much 100€ in todays money? Yeah that’s cheap.
I get 105,5€
