I’m sure the billionaires are quaking in their boots on their private islands. It was always just a matter of time, and they got a good innings.
Bad days for free speech
Like this is a good thing hahaha.
I hope so.
These turds are not the town square; “free speech” on commercial private enterprise platforms broadcasting worldwide must be limited and accountable to local and international laws like any other business.
It’s not about misinformation it’s about information they don’t want getting out.
I’ve been saying his for years – the social media companies are fucked if they refuse to relinquish some control over their content moderation.
Twitter can’t bend to the will of US censorship, the EU, Brazil, Saudi Arabia and China, all at once. It’s literally impossible as the laws can be in direct conflict with one another (e.g. banning LGBT content in Saudi Arabia might be seen as violating the rights of a protected group in the EU).
**Solution**; Build a content moderation API, and hand over control of moderation to the police/security forces in each country.
For example, If Saudi Arabia doesn’t like LGBT content, they can add a moderation filter to block any posts containing lgbt/gay/queer keywords. If France wants to block protest posts, the Gendarmerie they can do that. If the UK wants to ban far right speech, Met Police can do that. US wants to crack down on crypto scams, DOJ can add a filter for that.
Let each country deal with the overhead of moderation, just provide the tools necessary for the job and absolve yourself of responsibility.
So this is how free speech dies, with thunderous applause.
Telegram??? The app that all these Chinese and Russian scammers keep telling us to use after “accidentally” stumbling onto our phone numbers so that we can get to know them better???

Better late than never
They wanted to act as regulators instead of platforms? Fine. They will no longer be treated as platforms.
Hatred, lies, propaganda and violence are not elements of free speech but rather distruttive to social and society norms. Social media should be regulated especially to protect young people and protect democracy.
Free speech cant function when bad faith actors can reach millions of people with advanced
propaganda techniques, its sad but I dont think democracy can continue unless we do
more to combat the spread of
misinformation by foreign powers
Why do commies hate free speech so much.
They are literally words.
Those platforms have been actually helping dictators for long time.
I’m not sure arresting the Telegram CEO is a good thing. Telegram and Signal are one of the few places that allow full free speech. And justifying it with “well, we’ll fight foreign propaganda with it” sounds exactly like post 9/11 “well, we’ll fight terrorism” as an excuse to invade the Middle East.
social media giants are more powerful than most governments, their CEOs more powerful than most presidents, yet they are unelected, unaccountable, and for too long have been allowed to influence politics, decide elections etc.
Nationalize them then open source them. Linux and git are proofs that open source works well.
back in the day we really should’ve thought social media through before stuffing our faces with it
Why do people think of these platforms as free speech? When they have their own censoring. And in many cases just because of the whims of its owner. Like not being able to say cisgender on twitter for example.
Thank the fuck.
Thank the fuck.
I’m all for freedom of speech, but that should not equal freedom to hate, troll and misinform. Media regulators even in Western countries exist for a reason. Why can’t the same be for social platforms?
IMHO the case of Xitter, if it goes away doesn’t mean a loss of free speech. Since the owner is regularly silencing opinions and arguments from people he disagrees with. So it’s literally the opposite of free speech.
With Telegram it’s a bit more tricky, but it’s a fact it’s been used for harmful stuff too (selling drugs and spreading CP for example).
It makes sense to see this opinion promoted on reddit because reddit is owned by the Chinese communist party. I’m actually 100% serious, in case you didn’t know, reddit is literally communist propaganda wrapped in a capitalist shell.
If reddit promotes something you can be sure that thing is terrible.
I’m glad they are cracking down. Aliens are seeing our social media and concluding that we are not advanced enough to openly visit.
s/ for those the aliens are watching
