What are the Ukrainian drones targeting in Russia? | DW News
Ukraine has Unleashed one of the biggest waves of drone strikes to date on Russia authorities there say at least one woman has been killed and three people hospitalized in the overnight attacks in the Moscow region a number of Residential Properties were hit and around 50 flights had to be diverted from airports around the capital awakened by buzzing propellers people take to their Windows to see this an explosion followed by another one officials say at least two buildings were damaged in drone attacks a 46-year-old woman was reportedly killed several Apartments caught fire in the morning residents gather outside sharing what they went through just hours earlier you can see it there everything is messed up we were in shock I took what was nearby the children the dog everything and I ran away because I thought that the building would collapse as well moscow’s mayor said on social media that at least 15 drones were downed in the mosow region during the overnight attacks we grabbed our stuff and got out fast our car over there was also damaged it’s not clear yet how to pick up our belongings from the apartment the attacks also disrupted traffic at moscow’s airports with dozens of flights suspended Russian officials say more than 140 drones were downed overnight across Russia’s western region suggesting such massive Ukrainian attacks are becoming more frequent DW’s Rebecca Riders and Sergey sanowski join me now from Kee and rioo where DW has been operating since Russian authorities closed out Moscow Bureau so what do we know at this point about the extent of the attacks in Russia well it’s clear that this was one of the most massive drone attacks on Russia since the beginning of the war at least nine regions including the Moscow regions uh Moscow region have been affected and according to the ministry of Defense more than 140 drones were spotted there and uh some of the drones hit residential bu buildings as you said and for example in Ramin uh it is mosow region one one woman was killed and it is actually the first war related death right next to the uh to the capital of Russia to Moscow and eyewitnesses say they couldn’t sleep all night they saw fireballs and their houses were shaking according to local authorities hundreds of people have been evacuated also because because of the Dr attacks uh MH uh let me just but in there Rebecca what what are you hearing from ke well K has for a long time been stepping up these mid to long range drone attacks inside Uh Russian territory and those aims are various not least of all to try to bring some of this war home to Russia to try to affect people inside Russia and perhaps the the debate there or the certainly the media coverage of this war we know that Moscow many Russian cities have largely been insulated from the war unlike what we’ve been seeing on the ground here in Ukraine and this is certainly an attempt by Ukraine to try to bring the war home uh another reason of course for these drone attacks is uh Kev is still hasn’t had the go-ahead from its Western allies to be able to use long range weapons provided by the West these drones are are relatively cheap and they are a way for Ukraine to be able to just you know go manage these long distances to get deep inside Russian territory they’ve been hitting air bases command centers or sorry at least these have been targets and of course oil uh and gas refineries they’ve also been uh big targets we know that these drones are very cheap to manufacture many can be manufactured here in Ukraine at a fraction of the cost that they would cost you know being manufactured in the west and the air defenses used to shoot them down cost many hundreds of thousands of dollars of more of course the same can be said with the attacks that we’ve seen from the the overnight drone attacks from Russia coming in the other direction but certainly a multi-pronged aim that we’ve been seeing stepping up from both sides in recent months Sergey what’s the reaction in Russia and what did you want to say before yeah well kremin spokesperson Mitri pesov has just reacted to this attack and he said that the attack on residential buildings in Russia cannot be associated with military actions and also the Russian investigative committee open has opened a criminal case for terrorism uh so what what we’re seeing now is um something that we also saw with with the Ukrainian uh K con cursion which the kemy doesn’t see as a military attack and rather calls it a bandit raid Rebecca what is ke’s overall aim with these attacks well as I was just mentioning there are several aims to these attacks Ben uh you know not least of all trying to bring this war home to Russians on their own soil to perhaps bring up the coverage but also to try to force the hand of Peace similar to the incursion that we’ve seen in the Cur region in Russia’s Cur region that uh Ukraine launched around about a month ago this is as zeni has been saying an attempt to try to force Vladimir Putin into peace talks to sort of give him something that he has to come or that he’s going to you know push him or push the perhaps the Russian people to then uh push him to try to come uh to to to peace negotiations or at least try to to get an upper hand in this War uh as I was mentioning some of the targets are oil uh and gas infrastructure trying to Target trying to get to the heart of Russia’s economy now we know it relies heavily on oil and gas uh and trying to Target that infrastructure is also perhaps going to affect Russian citizens similarly to what we’re seeing coming from Russia on Ukrainian soil is their attempt to try to disrupt the energy uh sector here the infrastructure that’s being targeted here to try to make it very difficult for ukrainians to heat their houses and to power uh their houses particularly in the leadup to the winter months and we have been getting regular blackouts here in uh in Kev in in the center but also of course closer further towards the east we’ve been seeing you know very very long hours of blackouts and so you perhaps more effective on the Russian side but that’s certainly something that the ukrainians are trying to Temp with these drone attacks targeting oil and gas inside Russia and Rebecca you mentioned it before targeting uh deep inside Uh Russian territory what what does ke hope to gain from that well I mean president zilinski and the the whole defense Ministry the Ukrainian government have been pushing to actually be able to use as I was mentioning before these Western provided uh much more uh High you know the missiles that have been coming from the West into uh Russian territory now in lie of that they have been using these drone attacks but zeni has been pushing very hard the latest at a the defense a meeting of Defense ministers in Germany in the Ramstein Airbase uh last week trying to push for uh Nate for NATO allies to allow him to be able to uh allow the Army to be able to use these Western manufactured longrange weapons they say it sorely needed to be able to uh not only push back and stop uh what we’re seeing on the east in front and uh you know certainly what seems to be Russia getting an upper hand definitely in the donbass uh zinski also saying that that is definitely needed to be able to try to force peace with Vladimir Putin and try to encourage him to attend peace talks uh before the end of the year DW’s Rebecca ridders from ke and our correspondent Serge sanowski in rioo

0:58 poor kid is about to find out what conscription is…
Absolutely not sorry for Russians. They were laughing and keep ignoring more than 2 years about Ukraine's. Half of Ukraine city's are destroyed by Russians bomb. Russians even didn't think where are the Ukraine's who lived on those city's? Well, Russians you need to see everything what Ukraine's seeing more than 2 years now.
Few victims
This is what Putin started and returns back to Russia.
Putin's misanthropic perseveration is his own responsibility but what he has done to the serially misinformed people of Russia is absolutely criminal. What a mess…
Honestly Ukraine messed up real bad with this one
Sorry not sorry
So i see if you are in the " right " side you can do whatever you want
Poor civilians, I dont undestand this kind of war. Why not the UN just give this 2 President a boxing gloves and let them fight in the ring. Who ever win will withdraw their forces. That I call a real man, representing his country in the ring.
What goes around comes around!
1:20 are we sure it wasn’t 1,500 drones downed? And they used advanced lasers too? 😂
Zelinsky deliberately attacking civilians
Why would Ukraine attack civilian apartments?
CIA trolls are fully activated today
allways civillians diying in every war this is not fair no one keep the rules of hager convection .
They better get used to this.
Thank Putin.
DW did a poor job of communicating that the drone that hit the apartment building was 1/150 and was likely an accident, off target.
Ukraine doesn’t specifically target residential unless an important military person lived there.
Don't worry that was just a scratch to compare what Putin does to poor Ukraina, killed lots of small childrens and everyone else. Time for Russians to tell that man to step down. So sick to see life lost everyday.
What was the explanation for targeting civilians or where they just trying to cause terror?.
To Rusian people, your country in the war
Attacking civilians on purpose is a war crime !!
A good chance this is Putin doing his infamous false flag strategy
Probably two drones that had their GPS navigation jammed. The US could have prevented this if they had allowed Ukraine to use long range missiles that are not so easily jammed 😁
Why are they acting surprised?….
it's not like there's a ✌Military Operation✌ going on
The Ukrainians are trying to force the Russian people to want to stop the war. Same as the occupation of Kursk. If the war is unpopular it will be harder for Russia to wage it.
So ukraine can kill civilians?
why did they target a civilian building? how are they better than the russians now?
Ukraine Wil regret this
Welcome to the world of Putin Russians..
Slava Ukraine!!! 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
You will hear how loud the comedian and his handlers cry when Russia retaliate.
Nothing to see here, just a special military drone operation.
😂
Taste of your own medicine
😂😂😂
This is nothing compared to what Russia has done. Pathetic by comparison really.
For now….
Long time overdue
Trump 2024
Yes – as any powerless terrorist organization they target civilians – cause civiliants don't hit back.
Hey, Ruzzian. Don’t you need mirrors to see yourselves?
